Here's what was probably one of the last steel , lugged english made MTBs
It's Claude Butler Spectre 500 lx- Shimano group set with Bio Pace rings
7 speed . It's Reynolds 501 tubing. The gears work like clockwork.
More agile than you would think, well more agile than the ponderous MTBs I rode in 1985. This is a 90 or 91 model- there's a catalogue for it on Retrobike...
Not too cool at the moment- but just wait...
I brought it 2 years ago and it had probably spent the preceding 25 years in a shed. There were many MTBs brought but fewer rode.
I can't say I ve rode it much either. It's probably a little small- the actual TT is 55cm- and I am a short 5ft 8". So it should be fit some one 5ft 5 - 5ft8.
Or you could pop on some drops for a monster cross.
I have the orginal bars and tryes- Farmer Johns - if you want the retro look.
As you can see, I have put on new bars and tyres and the ride is much improved for.
Perfect as a commuter , touring , off road or a project.
Price £115- as I have regreased most of the bearings and changed the bars. Better than a Subway or a Rockrider and cheaper.
It lives in Walthamstow.. there are some more pics
