super light trials hubs good for track?

Posted on
  • Hi all, i was wondering if anyone had tried building a track wheel with a trials hub? like this one:

    http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/116mm_fixed_hubs/echo_tr_rear/c62p10706.html

the hub is 32 hole, and weighs in at ~170g, its also pretty cheap £45. but theres a few issues:

    1) threads. there is no counter rotating thread on this hub, so the lockring would have to thread on in the same direction. i dont think this should be such a huge problem

    2) as i understand it, these are designed for 116mm not 120mm frames. washers?

    3) i cant for the life of me find the chainline for the hub. i guess its 43mm?

    4) bearings, i guess trials bikes have no need for efficient bearings, but i think i can probably replace them if they are duff?

if theres any other glaring reasons i shouldnt try to build a wheel up with one of these, please tell me before i find out through trial and error :)

  • dont think you will even be able to fit a lockring which is a fundamental issue...

given all the other issues, why bother??

It cant be for lightweight purposes as it will have 32 spokes anyway

  • Weight is less of an issue on track, why the need to build with very light hubs? Seems a lot of faff for the sake of ~100g

  • its more a curiosity, as well as a viable option because of the price/weight ratio here. personally i would go 28H because i do ride on road as well, so the 32H isnt too far out of my scope.

  • I use a pair on my SSCX, no issues yet.
super light, made to jump around on, what can go wrong?
When I used it fixed I used a BB lock ring with locktite.
It's not the proper solution, and I wouldn't recommend for high speed city smashing, but for track I see no problems.

  • Are you planning on using that thing on the road?

  • You'd be better off just getting some cheap superlight Chinese track hubs or if you've got the cash then go for the American Classic track hubs for only 10g extra.

  • What is the diameter of that bit that is going to fit in your dropouts? I've never heard of "trials", but bmx hubs have lots of exciting bolt / nut arrangements some of which work nicely in a track frame and some which don't.
