Single wall rims ok for a 20" wheeled shopper?

I'm looking to swap the steep wheels on my shopper with alloy.

I know double wall rims are the standard these days. A pair of double wall rims new from SJS (the only UK place selling not-black 451 rims) will be £70 + postage. Or I can get a pair of single wall rims NOS on ebay for £20.

For a shopper bike with an 11 stone rider, will single wall be good enough?

You need to widen the forks and frame a bit to accept the wider axle and will need to make some sort of drop bolts for the brakes. I used some metal plates from the hardware shop bolted through the existing brake holes.

Do you mean the 406 size? I don't really want to go that small, my feet feel near the ground already! Also I'll be going for a dynamo hub front and coaster rear so pretty much certain to be a wheel build.

Try searching for Alienation Ankle Biter rims. They're double walls. I've heard of a few people using them on shoppers. I can't comment on how good they are, as I've got the Sun Ringle rims you've seen at SJS. I was about 15 stone when I built the bike up and like you, I didn't fancy single walls!

Like @sacredheart says though, you can spread the forks and the rear to accept BMX hubs and drop bolts for the brakes are easy enough to sort out.

Alienation Ankle Biter max weight 120lbs :( not really any cheaper than the SJS rims either. Sounds like it's either £70 or major diet time
