Southwark Cycling provisions

  • I see on Rider Down that there was a collision this morning in Camberwell. I hope very much that the cyclist is okay. I didn't think these thoughts belonged there.
Over the last couple of years I've been in touch with Barrie Hargrove about provisions in Camberwell. I go through other London boroughs and see improvements all the time. Southwark, at least the part of Southwark I live in (Peckham) seems unchanged. He (or his office) assures me I'm wrong, that they're doing loads. I find the same number of car-orientated one way systems, the same lack of cycle lanes and cycle routes and the same chaos on busy roads as I did when I came here fourteen years ago.
Camberwell is an accident black spot. Denmark Hill from Kings into the centre of Camberwell is a disaster. Directly outside the hospital the road's in such poor condition that it's a challenge to stay on, add to that busses, competing traffic changing lanes... This isn't an accident waiting to happen. Accidents happen here all the time.
Still Southwark tell me they're doing a great job.
    They're really not.

  • If you're on campaigning for better facilities, you could do worse than get involved with Southwark Cyclists, an LCC group.
