Speakers when cycling

  • Let's split the thread in two:

    1. We can rant for/against people having speakers whilst cycling
    2. We can recommend some low cost high quality/volume options

I have a tiny cheapo plastic speaker but it doesn't go loud enough with my aging ipod nano. It's fine on a quiet road or parks, but no good with real road use. Ideally looking to get a JBL Clip cheap. For me I don't want to piss off others with music while riding, just have something loud enough to hear over/with traffic without wearing earphones.

Found a JVC ABT1 for £30 today and couldn't resist, but it's huge, so that's the new laptop speaker I think.

What are you guys and ladies using?

  • X-Mini with a Sansa Clip in a top tube bag.

  • Collect in store only, almost nowhere has stock, checked earlier ;)

  • I got a jbl flip 2. The sound is really good, battery life is okish could be better and no clip which is a downside.

Sound quality makes up for all the bad stuff, and quite getting used to riding along with music. Used to feel like a cunt no longer care!

  • I have a couple of the china/ebay offerings. Both are really tough and can be dropped and stuff. I stopped as all my youtube clips from my camera got flagged for music use.

  • I don't know why people think I want to listen to their choice of music.

  • Neither do I, so they don't: but 200 solo kilometres with just yourself for company can >>>>>>

  • Gotta watch White Men Can't Jump now...

Went to E&C and paid a little more than Alibaba price for a jawbone jambox fake, since it's got the built-in micro sd slot. Seems alright, will try strap it to the bars later. Rubber covers come off easy enough, looks to be a user-replaceable battery so might be okay for long rides if the battery dies.

  • minirig duh

also of interest, if you want to fit in with other speaker fans:

  • Had a test of the fake jambox strapped to the tri bars (between elbow pads, aero). Quick hour/14mile loop.

Not a single pedestrian stepped out, but got a load of looks from people. Also makes a real difference to the ride, I was pushing a bit harder for sure.

Anyway, the micro sd didn't fly out, it worked even when I hit the drains/potholes, primrose hill didn't seem quite so steep, and best of all I could hear it over traffic.

  • oh yea...White Men Can't Jump is still awesome, had fun watching that last night. But why he wears cycling caps and there's no bike in sight I don't know

  • Zip tied my JBL Flip 2 to my saddle. Early indications are that it works well.

  • Was riding behind a geezer on Rosebury Ave the other morning, blaring out drum and bass.

A bit strong for 8am but fairy muff.

  • Anyone else remember this awesome game?

Wouldn't mind getting the MP3's of some of those tunes.

I found the speaker works better up on the handlebars, then it's directed at you, not the poor person following behind. Makes it audible even in traffic.

  • Good point. I may try a variation.

  • Used this on a 40 mile sportive yesterday. Me and my two mates loved it, as did the two wheelsuckers we picked up. one of them was 71 though, so fair play to him. He thanked is at the end and said he would not have made it without the music.

Volume was fine out in the country. Not sure about urban riding.
