EuroVelo 1 Norway - Bergen to Nordkapp

    I am thinking on embarking on this tour at the start of September, however my main concern is that the cycle route hasn't actually been finished and the route goes through several tunnels which are 'illegal to cyclists'. Has anyone ridden this route? any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

  • I did a small part of it this summer. Cycled south from Tromsø to Moskenes on Lofoten. The route went through several tunnels and they were totally fine (and legal) to cycle trough. I met several other tourers on the way heading for Nordkap so it seems like a quite popular route. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't have any issues at all! Should be an amazing trip!

  • Not sure. I know I've seen travel diaries of similiar routes online altough I don't remember where at the moment. Perhaps that could give more insight? I recommend ridewithgps.com for planning. There's a cycling layer you can use that will show you bike lanes and routes. Might help you avoid the longer tunnels.

  • @detsamma dyou mind me asking what route did you take on your Lofoten trip? How long did you take to do it? Would really like to plan a small tour around there this summer (och är du från Sverige?)

    It mostly follows Eurovelo 1. It's about 500km and we took 7 days to do it. You can do it faster for sure, but there's quite a lot of elevation so it was nice to take it easy. Remember to look up the timetables for the ferries! Some of them only have a few departures every day. Lofoten, Andöya and the areas around Tromsö are really something special. Definitely recommend it!

  • In my experiance the alternative to going through a tunnel, is a road which hasnt seen upkeep since the tunnel was completed.

    So basically most local cyclists will just head through the tunnel. Unless its a uber long under water tunnel. Then there'll be a ferry alternative.

    Just make sure you have lights.

  • If the tunnel is explicitly banned to cycles is there usually another way around?

  • There are a couple near me that head under fjords. You can't ride them.

    But the above ground ones are officially ok. You need lights, and it's not very pleasant, as cars don't have much room to pass. But I don't know of any illegal ones.

    I know most mapping sites won't allow a tunnel if you have them set to cycle. I have a 10 meter long tunnel I ride through a lot, and garmin won't map that part of my course.

  • Actually there is one near me that's closed to cyclists. It's short, well lit, and roomy. So I've ridden through it a lot. But because they kept open the road the tunnel replaced. They set up a no cyclist sign.
