• Hey,

So I've been rebuilding a royal enfield club bike which is the first time I've properly stripped a bike so please excuse any ridiculously stupid questions but I had to remove the headset as it was a bit knackered but I'm now having real trouble finding a replacement.

I went into the LBS and they said I needed a one " but when I order this on amazon I doesn't fit. I've measured with a vernier callipers and put an image of the inner headtube diameter in the post.

I'd really appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction. The headset is threaded and that's all I know really. if you need more info to help let me know and ill get measurements.

    Thanks in advance.

    J

  • Have you measured the inside size of your frame where the h/s cups go? You also need to measure the external face of the h/s where it goes into the frame. There's normally something like .2 or .3mm difference between the two as you want a snug fit and this intended to create a snug fit. Because of this you also need some way of "pressing" the cups into the frame. There's tool you can by but they're uneconomical if you're only doing it once in a while.
You can make a press with a couple bits of wood and long bit of studdingand nuts/washers, google "diy headset press".
The bigger issue I'd say before going any further is to determine if the crown race is the right size before fitting your cups.
I think there's two sizes 26.4 and 27??? I'm not 100% sure but you need to ensure the crown you've got fits the crown race seat on the fork.
Again these are friction fit so you need some way pressing on.
    good luck

  • 1" threaded headsets are mostly ISO these days. Up to the eighties a lot of bikes had JIS as well. And before 1960's pretty much everything had the 'raleigh standard' headset with different threads (26 not 24 TPI).

Sheldons crib sheet explains it all neatly.

(Old school BMX are different again!)

I'll check to see if I have any of the raliegh ones..
