Gazelle Champion Mondial

  • Hi all, I purchased this off Ebay 2 years ago, now it's time to get the frame & forks re-enamelled and built up. I'm thinking of having it re-sprayed a single colour, in keeping with a Gazelle tradition, I'm trusting the job to Brian Rourke in Stoke-on-Trent, a nice blue, decals from Premium Bicycle Decals again off Ebay, I'll post pics as and when, anyone interested?

  • Lets see it! Loves me Dutchies.

    Is it a track frame?

  • I'd be interested! Love a good Gazelle!

  • Hi guys, it's a road frame, frame number says circa 1984/5 Reynolds 531c, Campagnolo dropouts, Bocama lugs, it's got a beautiful metal head badge, I want that kept, so will have to be masked off, also small Gazelle pantos on fork crown, I want those masked and painted in white, I'll take a couple of pics tomorrow. Cheers

  • Here's the frame & forks, needs a re-spray!!!

  • So here's the frame & forks, I'm erring towards a nice blue (lighter than the Gios shade) with white decals, here's the problem, I've got a complete Shimano Tricolor 8 speed group set, except the STi's was thinking of buying a set of Claris shifters, would it look out of place, ordered Deda Murex stem and Speciale bars and silver RS 01 seatpost, San Marco Rolls saddle, wheels Shimano 105 or Ultegra on Mavic Open Pro Sport grey 32's, Vittoria Open Corsa SC (700x23 Black and Tan) what do you all think will it look cool?

  • It sounds good! here is a link to give you an idea of the blues Gazelle used - http://jvs.webklik.nl/page/kleur - My bike is actually the one shown if you click 'gazelleblue' in that link - love that colour combo...

I'm also a massive fan of the colour yours is already, here is one that has been restored (with the addition of yellow bits in the lug cut-outs) http://www.pedalroom.com/bike/gazelle-champion-ab-1986-1240

Maybe start a wanted thread to find the tri-colour 8speed shifters?

I'd be thinking of the grey H+Son TB14 rims (23mm wide) and 25mm Open Corsa SC though...

    good luck!

  • Hi, your bike is cooool! That's the sort of blue I want, thanks for your advice about the rims, why those and not Open Sport grey? I do like white but I've got a Francesco Moser Modello GP in white, it'd look too similar. Regards

  • Cheers! the inverse colour-way is really nice as well - see @Skull_&_Biscuits AA Super monostay...

I've gone for H+Plus Son because of the wider bsd... it allows the tyre to behave more like a tub... I have nothing at all against Open Pro's though, but if going for Mavic I'd keep an eye out for some ceramics as they don't succumb to rim wear (as quickly) like all other anodised rims do...

  • Cheers mate, I doubt it'll get ridden very often, Sunday morning club runs or easy training rides, rim wear won't be a problem, I hope! Just need to stop dicking about and get frame sent off, by next Wednesday is the aim. Thanks for your interest.

  • No worries, just a thought... before stumping up for a respray, it might be cheaper to buy another CM in blue?
marktplaats.nl is always a good place to keep an eye out for them - http://www.marktplaats.nl/z.html?query=gazelle+champion&postcode= (if you need any help let me know, it's a bit different from ebay!)

    Good luck!
    Matt

  • Thanks Matt, if I don't get the frame re-sprayed it'll sit in the garage collecting dust! Rourke charge about £150 for a single colour, Ive got to get it done I bought it over 2 years ago!!!! Thanks for your help and advice, I'll keep an eye out on marktplaats.nl, I'm always on the look-out for retro frames and kit. Regards Nic

  • Deda bars, stem and seat post arrived today.

  • Been put on the back burner, but I'm gonna decide on a colour scheme very soon and get it sent to Rourke's for the re-spray over the winter, still can't decide on a colour scheme, I've been looking in Gazelle catalogues nothing jumps out ay me, maybe a "dark" red.

  • You might need a Shimano RD-6402 if you are planning on having 600 Ultegra STI

  • Go "Amstelrood"! One of my faves.. Or the plain and simple Skala team colors (watch out for correct placement of the decals)

And slap some Campy SR on it ;)

  • Hi, I love the dark red, and white always look cool as well, need to stop dicking about and send the frame and forks off, gonna get Brian Rourke to do the job, decals from Ebay, should look sweeeeeet! I've got all the bits, apart from wheels and STi shifters, think I'll buy a set of 8v Claris, I've got a set of Tricolor 8v shifters, but the front mech changer is knackered. Cheers

  • Nice frame!

My gf 's one has the same colors as above (it is an AB-frame and today's looking a bit different than how it was in the picture). It's almost all Campy Victory today:
