Then how do you down sshift if it wont upshift. Does the shofter pull cable on each click when the cable is removed from the mech. If so it is not the shifter.

Downshifting is fine into the easier gears. Whenever I upshift to a harder gear it slips through to the smallest ring/cog. If I disconnect the rear mech and operate the finger paddle it pulls the cable up incrementally as you'd expect, but when I push on the thumb trigger (and there is tension of the cable) it releases the cable entirely. Hope that's clear

I've bought 'broken' campag shifters online before that needed nothing more than removing the hoods and cleaning the gunk out of the shifting mechanism with a bit of WD40.
whether that's the case here or not impossible to say but if you're reasonably handy they're not hard to disassemble and have a look what's going on.

Which model/what year is it? Pics?

The shifter is a 2013 Campag Veloce.
I took the bike into my LBS and they thought it might be a quick fix. They soon said it would cost £45 for a strip down that wasn't guarantied to achieve anything or £90 for a new one. I figured I might learn something if I tried doing it myself.

Hope the picture works this time, I'm not sure it'll be of any use though

If it's 2013, it's Powershift. :(
If you look at this page from the 2013 spares catalogue, you'll see that there are few individual spares available, so if your problem is due to wear (rather than gunk) then I think you'll have to buy another shifter.
For the £90 you've been quoted, you could buy a pair of 2009/2010 Veloce Ultrashift Ergo: IMHO these (and Centaur from the same two years) represent the acme of ten speed Ergo, being the only ten speed Ergo that are both the 3rd gen. shape and Ultrashift.

Thanks Scilly, I'll probably put an ad up on here and then hit ebay

Give it a blast with GT85/WD40: I believe that PS is somewhat like Shimano STi and that seems to fix a lot of them, from what I read.

The 2009/10 levers are easy to spot by the logo, which changed in 2011.
The brake lever is the only difference between Centaur and Veloce: they are exactly the same unit otherwise.
Both Centaur and Veloce actually used the Athena left-hand/front derailleur Ergo.

Hmmm... interesting development
Gave it a good blast and now it's skipping three or four sprockets at a time rather then going all the way through the block. Wouldn't that suggest there's an issue of gunk rather than something properly terminal?

I honestly couldn't say, but the fact that it's improved somewhat would encourage me to persevere...

Perservere with them. I think i have those ultra shift ergos on my wifes bike. I should swap them for the powershift ergos on my bike She wont notice as she does not use the bike at present.

Sorry if this has been covered anywhere else already.
I'm having an issue with my right hand Veloce shifter. Downshifting is fine, but when upshifting the chain drops through the cassette block to the hardest gear every time.
Any ideas?
