Geekhouse can do tapered steel headtubes now? Nice!
How are you treating the geo?
-
• #3
Exciting build! Why tapered if you can have a 44 mm HT?

This is going to be good, paint ideas?
-

Paint is a long way away, as the waiting list is 10 months. I quite like this though:

Seems good.
OS HT and bottle mounts are both things I wish my GT had - or at least 1 1/8 HT so I could have Enve foks

Spec agreed with Marty, and deposit about to be put down.
I've been thinking about the paint scheme. I quite like the military look above. Then I was wondering whether Navy with white decals might work. Then I got onto thinking whether an American flag theme could be good. Red frame with white decals, and blue fork with stars. It could be an homage to the GT National team bikes, especially as it will feature triple triangles and True Temper tubing.

This went on hold but I am know progressing with Marty. The brief is to build a frame that is comfortable on road and track. So it needs a high enough bottom bracket to be compliant, but geo won't be super aggressive, and it will have decent tyre clearance and bottle bosses. Would be good to hear any ideas within those parameters.

Geekhouse have also started building titanium frames. The thought of going titanium is tempting.

American themed please

Right, after going round the houses on this I decided to switch the frame build to a Mudville disc. Spec as follows:
- True Temper OX Plat
- Straight 44mm ID head tube
- Paragon 142x12mm Disc Drop-outs
- Enve Disc Fork – 12mm thru axle
Planning to build up 1x11, with a Quarq Riken Al crank, Shimano RS685 shifters/ brakes, and Ultegra derailleur and cassette.
The frame can take 650b or 700c, so agonising on which sized wheel to go for in the first instance. I'm tempted by 650b to see what the fuss is about. I'm not sure what the max tyre clearance would be.
I can fit 40mm tyres on my Canti Mudville - I'm wondering if it would be able to clear 1.95 inch tyres with a 650B setup.
And paint - need to think about that.

What's happening with the canti mudville?!

Ha - that is staying with me!

Is the disc one going to be more road based? Is this why you've sold the BMC?
Fine, well when you want to swap it for the GT lemme know ;)

Inspired by these two bikes, I'm going for Illusion Orange:

good call on the switch from fixie to cx. theres no much to gain from buying a custom fixie

I hope he get to build it before you change your mind again. ;)

Ha - i think i have gone back and forth three times - but the spec is set in stone now.

Weighing up wheel and groupset options. For wheels I was going to opt for Ardennes Plus SL disc.
For group, I wasn't sure whether to go Sram Force CX1 disc group, or to go for Shimano ST-RS685 levers and brakes, with Rotor 3D24 cranks. The reason for the latter would be to give me the option of running single or double chain rings. What are the pros and cons?
Also, I have no idea about disc brakes and need to ask a load of noob questions for example:
- what is the difference between post mount and flat mount? Will my frame / fork accept either?
- what size rotors would I need? Is this a matter of choice, or am I constrained to a certain size, contingent on other choices?
- Wheel set of choice takes CentreLock - what is the difference between CentreLock and 6 Bolt?
- what is the difference between post mount and flat mount? Will my frame / fork accept either?

The forks would be post mount as there is no flat mount fork option yet .. I saw one on aliexpress and Mason Aperture 2 will be but both are road forks.

you could go 140 front and rear and see how they work for you (speed, weight, type of riding etc) if not 160F, 140R.

I like CL because I like shimano and DT swiss. CL is easier to mount and you cant go wrong, rotor stays true. I'd go with DT 240 hubs or if you are on budget 350 but they only come in 32h.
You can now get shimano 4 bolt narrow wide rings, both wolftooth and absoluteBlack make them up to 42t.
This set up weighs less than CX1 cranks and a direct mount chainring.
If you want 1x11 the long cage ultegra mech and a narrow wide ring would work and @andyp is running that set up for cross without issues I think. Di2 is easier as you can get XTR Di2 rear mech (Or XT Di2 which is cheaper but you will have to wait).
There is hardly any price diff in mechanical and Di2 versions of 1x11 shimano set up, I am going with the latter.

I'm sure TV doesn't need telling but an XTR Di2 rear mech is £300, which isn't really a cheap replacement when it explodes in the mud in November. I'd go Sram CX1 then run a SRAM MTB clutched rear d, which at £40 is a bit more palatable.

Punchy for a new rear mech! From what I've read, running a standard Shimano rear derailleur and a narrow wide chainring works fine - no need for clutched rear derailleur.
I emailed Marty @geekhouse today to get the ball rolling on a track bike. The plan is to build something that can be used on the velodrome and the road. The outline spec I sent to Marty was:
Now to see how long the wait list is! I think this will be a while in coming, but I thought I would kick off a thread to get inspiration for the process.
