rear triangle spreading/compressing

Posted on
  • i have few track bikes now, most of them have a tighter rear triangle and i have to spread it to get the rear wheel in. one is wider and gets compressed when tightened. at two of them the spacing is exact 120mm. all of them are set with the same gear ratio.

the bikes with the exact 120mm somehow feel "tired" when riding.

could the spreading/compressing the rear triangle act in a stiffer more responsive ride ?

  • some one ?

  • More likely to be the tubing quality that effects responsiveness not the squashing. Sheldon Brown shows how the cold set frames and you have to bend them alot before the metal remembers to stay in the new place.

  • ^this is more likely. There are many factors that affect feeling the bike flex ( different wheels, cranks, tubing, tires, cockpit). So unless you have the exact same frames and components of the same age the rear triangle spread wouldn't be the first place to look. More knowledgeable people are welcome to weigh in :)
