Loctite for chainring bolts?

Posted on
  • Stripped my bike down yesterday and see that the (SRAM Omnium) chainring bolts had been treated with a thred locker.

How critical is this? I'd instinctively apply a little grease, but have some Loctite if that's a good idea. It's an all weather bike.

    Cheers

  • Loctite 22 for chainring bolts: you want them to stay in place.

  • Yeah some of the Omnium ones has the green smudge - for my part I expect the green stuff to go into re-action when I tight them back again (without applying new loctite). I haven't got any issues.

  • Tightened up to torque with assembly grease and you shouldn't have any problems.

  • Hmmz, I think I don't have neither the loctite nor the grease.

Stronglight bolts, they seem to be pretty much solid, should I put some, or leave them be?

  • Chainlube/linoil would be nice - but you can do a dry install and get away with it for a couple of rides, but you have to check tension before each ride until you pull them apart again and lube that shit up.

(Loctite and traditional chain ring bolts is not something I recommend - only the hex-key system).

  • They seem to be holding fine so far (6 months)...

I'll put some Lithium G grease today, thanks! I also have Chain-L oil, but I highly doubt that would be appropriate?

  • Oil if you are stuck in Sahara and it's the only lube you have.

  • Lithium grease it is :)

  • Let's not fall-out, but I have to disagree: chainring bolts aren't something you want coming loose.

They're supplied with threadlock, and not lubed, for a reason...

  • Yes - can't really counter argue that :)

  • They're supplied with threadlock, and not lubed, for a reason...

Damn it. Lithium grease, yes or no?

  • I'm falling a bit out - but I am quite sure you can apply a bigger moment on lubricated threads than dry threads. Are you stuck in Sahara yes or no? :D

  • I've just re-did the bolts with grease :)

Tightened up to torque with assembly grease and you shouldn't have any problems.

  • So to recap, in this thread we have:

    • Loctite yes, loctite no
    • Assembly grease yes, assembly grease no
    • Chain lube?!

    Thanks, Obama!

  • I've just re-did the bolts with grease :)

    You're dead to me :(

  • Just came back from a short ride & still alive. Can we still be friends? :)

  • Walk on water, stone to bread?

  • I can't stay mad at you, you young rascal!

  • Thanks a lot for the replies. Given that there was thread locker on there already and some recommend it, I'll stick some on. Cheers.
