I'm also about to swap out the Thomson X2 stem for the X4. From riding a bit with the X2 it has been slipping on me. I am a big guy and it only happens when I'm leaning on the bars... but at times I lean on the bars... so it must go.
I'll try a X4 as I want the Thomson excellent quality but want it to remain functional and robust. Weight is not something I'm bothered about so I won't cry over 40g

Here's some pictures of the wheels. I decided to lace them myself but lack of a truing stand and knowledge meant I didn't do the whole job, off to Condor they went to finish up.
Both 32H, front radial, rear 3-cross.

Have you got the Thomson properly torqued and installed? There should be a similar gap top and bottom between the faceplate and the body of the stem.

• #6
Yeah, even gaps, torque wrenched, tried with greased & ungreased bolts, assembly paste & no assembly paste. No luck.

Handlebars are taped and I have the X2 and X4 stems... Decisions...
Because its an old X4 if I install it -10 degrees the logo will be upside down... OCD Twitch

i way prefer the X4 to X2

I had same issue with those bars and a X2. Properly installed but very prone to slipping on a unexpected bump. I found there was quite a bit of leverage going on if you hold them towards the upwards bend and they only slipped when my hands had wandered all the way forward.
I cut mine down to take out the bend and they haven't slipped since.
Also look better as the bar-end brake lever runs parallel to the bar, not pointing to the ground. -

Forget aesthetics for a sec, are you sure the x2 isn't too long for the bars you're using?

Too long? As in overall stem length?
Just fyi my opinion is, its a road bike stem and functions fine for that. Ive only ever noticed slipping when im fully leaning on the bars. Im 6' 3" and about 90kg. I think in my case its just that its not designed for that kind of load. Its never slipped during normal 'road use' although ive read and heard cases of it happening to others.
Also, a prime focus of this build was nice, high quality parts that are robust. So I think I'll stick with the X4 for dependability. Might just have to tape over the upside down logo.

you do know that the deda bars are 31.7 and the thomson stem is rated for 31.8.. i know it sounds dumb, but that might be the case as i encountered the same problem on other occasions when the bars and stem had this difference..

Good spot, I had also noticed that and I read about it a lot before pairing the two. Supposedly 31.7 and 31.8mm are metric conversions of 1 1/4 inches (31.75mm), deda happen to round down and others round up. Personally I think clamping force would negate any difference of 0.1mm if it existed. I have also had it slip with leader downtown drop bars which are classed as 31.8mm.

Nicee, How much did you spent on the wheel set also did condor charged you?

Condor charged £38 for a tension & true on both wheels.
All in all including that charge they worked out at about £275
Rims £110
Hubs £75
Track nuts £12
Spokes/Nipples/Rim tape £40
Build costs £38
Another Cinelli build. Read on if you like, haters gonna hate.
I've been slowly accumulating parts to build up a new Vigorelli. After much deliberation on what frame to get I decided to 'ride whatever makes you smile' and I'm one of those people who are attracted to the Cinelli bling.
Some of these parts have already arrived so I'll backdate some pictures to capture the whole thing. There are also a couple of parts from previous bikes that I wanted to reuse. The saddle for example was measured up by the guys are Specialized body geometry and is a great fit for me, so it stays.
