Green/Eco friendly electronics

  • I'm considering a new handset as mine is pretty fucked and I've been due an upgrade for at least 6months but an apathy has finally kicked in- I don't really need one. The screen cracked worse than Pookie from the New Jack* but it still works. I guess keeping on using this is the best way to keep a relatively clear conscience. Not sure I could stomach breaking through more plastic/cardboard packaging for an incremental increase in performance in the newest shiny thing just to add another handset to sit in 'that' drawer for another 5 years.

Now the market has hit saturation I guess the MO for phone companies is endless upgrades. It'd be nice when that point arrives where public opinion is strong enough to sway manufacturers to pay more than lip service to their approaches with new designs. I've found a couple of sites running "the greenest handsets on the market" both from the same year yet have different models?! Doesn't look like there is an independent body that state ratings outside of an individual company's marketing dept.

Sorry for the waffle, if you're that way inclined and you happen to come across any products that you think belong here, please add them.

  • Couldn't you just have the screen repaired?

  • Get a senior citizen's non-smartphone. You know you want one. :)

  • Does anyone on here do anything with old electronics?

I have a dead Kiss 1600 media player thing with DVD and network connectivity and it seems a shame to bin all that cool electronics.

Is there a place that would reuse any of it?

  • The same as there's a bunch of bikes for Africa projects, there are projects to take old phones, refurbish them and put them to use over there. Obviously Africa is a big place with lots of countries so you probably want to consider which project you're donating to. Most of them centre around key workers so they can work more effectively. Is it "eco"?

Also worth considering is that the WEEE directive places an onus on businesses to keep decommissoned electronics out of landfill and recycle them. A lot of retailers will offer to "take your old one away" for free. Most of them turn it into another revenue stream but on balance, I think that's fair enough.

  • Still not sure where it can go.
Those places @DFP suggested seem to be for repairing - doesn't look like they want to take old shit.
It's got another week then it's bin time.

  • Yeah, I know. But they run clubs for people to go fix things/learn. And someone might want your thing for parts, or perhaps to fix it for keeps. Its a longshot though, because the tech is quite obsolete.

Do dispose of it in an environmentally conscious manner if possible though.

  • That's why I was asking. I think the best thing for it is to leave it in the street and let the buses have at it.
