Pedal Taps

  • Trying to put a super cheap 1x9 setup on a mtn bike frame. These cranks are super cheap and I want to buy them, but not the required pedal taps....

Does anyone have pedal taps they'd be willing to lend. I'm based in Putney, Work in Westminster and willing to cycle within reason....

    Cheers in advance,
    Tim

  • Do you really think it's worth it? Maybe cheap financially but in hassle ..... ?

  • Missed out on the cranks as I was delayed in the pub. Yeah it would have been a hassle, but I've not tapped a thread before. Learning as you go with bikes is all part of the fun to me. If I added a theoretical labour charge for my own time tinkering I would never do anything myself...

  • I like your attitude!
For future reference: some wobbly threads can be rescued by liberal grease + screwing an old pedal from the inside of the crank if you dont have 9/16" handed taps to hand.

  • Rethreading wouldn't make any difference as the process of cutting a thread removes material, doesn't add a thread to it.
The only way to save them would be to use a helicoil which still wouldn't be perfect and hard to get straight.

You were saved by the pub in this case.

  • Cool, thanks for the advice.

In my head, if it was just the first thread crossed preventing the pedal going in, the tap might sort that first bit out, leaving the rest to be "good enough"?

My other logic was that if it all went wrong, i'd be less than a tenner out of pocket.

As it is I spent far more than 10 pounds in the pub leaving me worse off and feeling average.
