Mavic 501 rear hub problem

Posted on
  • Hello Chaps,

I want to replace the bearings on a pair of Mavic 501 hubs, but as usual for such a simple task there is an impasse, which in this case is the damn bearing cover with the six holes. It's stuck fast and I don't have the mythical tool to remove it, a two prong pin spanner won't budge it either, any tips as to how to unwind it?

  • The "mythical tool" is still used in every Mavic wheel set, so every shop will have one. If it's seized, try GT85 or WD40 first

  • If you get really stuck, use the skills us humans got sometime after we evolved from being monkeys, and make a tool. I'd suggest 6 small bolts through a bit of bar might do the trick.

  • The 'mythical' tool is the heavy duty 6 pin item, the 'freebie' tool you get with wheelsets is the 4 pin plastic jobby.

Anyhow it's off now, a youth in a local bike shop went around the back with it and returned with the siezed part separated.
