While I have been waiting to get compatible parts for this build, with the help of @Vince and @anidel - latest bit of drama is rethreading the cranks currently at Fitzrovia, I have also been trying to do something creative with a freebie frame, so I thought, why not something dramatic?
A couple months back, I scored this in the friendly neighbourhood recycling programme:
I couldn't work out what it is exactly - it has been sprayed matte black all over, including over the Viking head badge, which seems to not really fit between the nervex(?) lugs:
Luckily, it also came with BB and cranks - missing a cotter on the drive side though:
I came across a cheap 24" wheel and NOS chromed fork on ebay (didn't realise the wheel was 507 at first though, rather than 540), so I thought I would chuck those on there:
I assumed with a 700 wheel on the rear, I would surely get that great, aggressively-slanting top tube look I have envied on other bikes, but the result is in fact a bit comical:
I thought maybe it would look better in the light of day, once I have trimmed the top of the forks and put on some handlebars, but in the end it still looks a bit like a "clown bike" (as mrs mitch says):
Everything on there but the brakes (looking for something quite small, probably only able to run a rear brake as I'm afraid I might roll right over the top otherwise)... but I may have just lost the heart to see this one through. Perhaps this should serve as a cautionary tale of what not to do with an old Viking frame!
