  • Looking to learn whilst completing a build on this 1980's Raleigh but am a complete novice when it comes to putting builds together. Am looking to spec high grade components but fear this may be costly in mistakes.

RALEIGH KELLOGG´S PRO TOUR FRAME AND FORKS
    REYNOLDS 501 TUBING
GIPIEMME DROPOUTS (Rear 126 mm, Front 100 mm)
    SEAT POST DIAMETER 27.2 mm
    ITALIAN QUILL STEM 100 mm
68 mm ENGLISH THREAD BOTTOM BRACKET

Anybody out there happy to be asked (and answer) some pretty dumb questions?

We all have to start somewhere but I sincerely believe if a job needs doing it should be done properly, hence why I'd rather not skimp on components.

In the first instance I am looking to lacquer the frame and, as the forks are pretty much buggered, I want to get some decent carbons on it.

Budget for the build is about 2K. Already have suitable wheels - Mavic Open Pro Ceramics, Sapin laced on Chris King Hubs.

  • Did you say budget 2K???????????? not £200 and is that a crack in the BB

    Andy

  • Yep 2K.

  • I just spent 700 boys on this

    http://www.lfgss.com/conversations/255094/

and fancy putting together something similar.

Nope, I know that looks like a crack but its fine.

  • Honestly don't throw 2k at this, build it up as a beater for £200 ride it to death and buy something off the wall amazing with the other £1800. My Ex TDF Lo Pro only cost £500 to fully build, just put a 4 spoke Corima on the rear still only brings it to £640. Now I know Lo Pro,s aren't everyones cup of tea but there are a lot of bikes out there.

    Andy

  • I kind of want to learn something.
I have 14 bikes and realised I know next to nick about maintaining or building them.
    I need to rectify that.

  • Then learn how to source parts cheap and not be too serious if it goes wrong, seriously though get that BB checked. I had a 531 pro ti that had a crack in it that looked like the mark in your BB, that failed not a fixed so not a huge problem just a pain.

    Andy

  • By spending 2k? Doesn't make sence. Why don't you just buy a few standard tools, watch a few you tube video's on stuff that you want to do and ask for advise along the road?

Think first thing this frame needs is a respray or at least a lacquer to keep it from rusting.

  • I will get the BB checked. Good advice, thanks.

The frame I want to lacquer. Rather keep the aesthetics as-is, as it were.

  • I thought you said that you had worked for Evans, but then again that would explain why you know fuck all.

  • Where on earth did I say I worked for Evans?

  • you got some sound advice here, if you want to learn how to service a bike buy a heap of second hand components and try to make them work. the frame you have in your hands would be a nice city commuter with risers/ flat bars, , MTB trigger shifters and brake levers, maybe 1-2x8 speed setup, 32c tires and full mudguards. all the components you would need would be available second hand (classifieds, E-bay) in good quality for under 250-300 GBP.

  • "The mint makes it first, it is up to you to make it last."

Even if as suggested you end up building as a commuter don't spend more than £100 extra on parts. I'd put money on that being a crack so anything you do put on it is compromised. It would be hard to justify spending 2k on parts on any steel Raleigh, especially when something like this happens http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Raleigh-853-Road-Frame-SPD-/171535952755
2k would cover a Master Piu build with dura ace group and still leave enough left to donate and give many communities access to clean drinking water, or food.
If you want to get to know bikes and you have that much money, start a community project with volunteers that dismantle donated bikes and keep the usable parts building bikes for people that aren't as fortunate as yourself.

Or treat us all to Zunow build

  • You really don't need to spend £2k to build up this frame. As many have said, you will learn so much more building this up as a beater. If you are insistent on splashing out on nice components , then at least put them on something a bit higher end. That's not to say I've got anything against 501- I've got 2 frames just like this- because they're 2 a penny.

I'm not quite sure how you've come to own 14 bikes whilst thinking that spending £2k on a 501 frame was a good idea. But if you want to learn something ( a lot) and have the cash, then I know what I'd be doing. Best of luck and kudos for wanting to learn and looking for the advice.

  • Er... this is a wind-up.

  • obvious troll is obvious

lol @ chris king hubs on 501 gaspipe piece of shit

  • .

  • Such hostility.
We all have to start somewhere - as I said, its a project.

Thanks to those that have provided constructive comments, which I will take onboard.

  • I wasn't planning on spending more than 1000 bucks rebuilding my Colnago
    http://www.lfgss.com/conversations/256822/
but I have spent more than that already and in order to finish it will require another 1000 bucks.

try to spend 200£ and even if you spend 2000£ at least you'll know you didn't take the piss and tryed to keep a reasonable budget. If you've read through other threads on bike builds the fact that people are doing it on a budget is nearly humbling in itself cause bikes are EXPENSIVE.

  • although I struck gold today

found a site thats selling tubular tyres in my size, colour, free delivery and at half price.

    Was €93.19 for 1

    Now €46.59

    • free shipping

    (patience helps)

  • I think I should contextualise myself somewhat, more so for those that want to help me - Those that wish to be negative, fuck em.

I spend 10 hours a day in operating theatres. I work very hard, and I am reimbursed very well indeed.

In my spare time I ride. Thats what I do.

I ride most types of bikes, from Super Record Mercians, to mini velos. I have ridden LEJOG on my Chas Roberts Transcontinental and I have worked within the industry previously. I have never worked at Evans.

I now work in 6 different hospitals from London to the East Midlands. I spend 5 nights a week in hotels. I have at least one bike permanently in my car. I am lucky enough to have a decent estate vehicle so most nights I pull my bike out and take it for a thrape. If in London its usually one of my single speeds, in the East Midlands it may be a hardtail round Rutland Water. It might as easily be my Ribble Stealth. It's irrelevant - I ride.

Each bike gives me a tremendous amount of pleasure. I prefer to ride alone - I don't need to be accepted or judged. I am no threat to those charged with testosterone like @roadwarrior

I'd like to learn to put bikes together. I thought it would a be a great thing to do.

I chose the 501 purely emotionally. Not through function. I have my reasons, which I don't feel I need to share. If the frame is fucked I will buy another one. Maybe I will ask advice from someone on here. For me the frame is simply a tool to allow me to develop. But it's vital to me it's British.

Recently I bought the Ribble mentioned earlier in this thread. It rides absolutely beautifully. I have many bikes, but this one rides like a dream. This is where the Chris King hubbed wheels come from (I see them as being transferable).

I want to create something myself of similar calibre. Call it a project.

I want to spec high as I don't, at present, have the inclination to trade constantly. This is why I may need advice. So, yes I am just as likely to put Dura Ace brakes on it. I apologise in advance if that doesn't work for some of you but what I don't want is to keep upgrading, as essentially it will cost more. I hope that makes sense.

That is the logic in my thinking. I don't need a cheap bike to bez about on. I have a few already.

Tools - I have the Park Tool EK1 set so far. I know I will need to invest in more. I see quite a lot of the budget going on tooling.

Thanks again to those that have invested in me. I will take on board what you say, but please continue to help me out here lads.

  • If there is any sentimental value to the frame, keep it together with forks and go for the original paint scheme. If you are just after a classical British frame from that era, ditch this and get something nicer. Fit some 28c tires to feel up the generous clearences and DA 7700 for that classy look with modern action. Try to get the group together or source indivual parts in E-bay, local listings or Classifieds here. Obviously to try to get the performance to the max level fit new casette, chain and cables. Regarding the BB and headset it's usually a pain with second hand ones, so maybe go for new ones as well. Or anyway that is what I would do.

    PS get that crack solved!
PPS regarding the compatibility issues and other technical questions Sheldon Browns webpage should get you going.
