Mavic sealed bearing replacement

Posted on
  • I'm looking to replace the cartridge bearings in a Mavic Ksyrium SL front wheel. The wheel is about 4-5 years old, and has a knocking noise when spun

After looking here, and on the Mavic website I've tracked down and purchased the bearings - so now it's the fitting to do. It seems there's two things I need-other than experience or bravado- a hub wrench and a bearing press kit.

The hub wrench is labelled as M40123 and should be the same as a wrench for Ksyrium/Crossmax SL/Elite/XL wheelsets, and the Cosmic Carbone SL.
The press bearing kit is M40373.

Does anyone have, or know where I could buy, rent or temporarily steal any of these?

They are probably sitting in a Mavic dealer's workshop somewhere. I'd be OK with handing the new bearings over to get it done by someone braver than me also, as I think there's some mallet work involved.

Cheers for sharing any experience with this

  • The Mavic wrench should have come with your wheels, it's a plastic thingy with 4 pins (or 6?) that engage with the hub cap.
Once removed, axle off, tap off, tap in. You can build a press out of a threaded rod, two nuts, two washers... very simple.
If you are in a real spot of bother and Richmond is handy to you, drop me a line.
ANY shop can do it too

  • Cheers, yep that's what I'm after. I've contacted the original owner of the wheels to see if he has a wrench....I'm going to check out LBK and the LBS as well.

You make the replacement sound easy - I thought it would be more of a whack.
