mullered bb cup

  • hi people, ive totally broken a plastic cup in the bb shell, what do i do now?

  • Is it stuck? Shouldn't be too hard to cut/break.

Is this the plastic cup from one side of a cartridge bottom bracket? If so replacements are a few quid on ebay.

  • hi cheers, yeah theres still a far amount in there but most of the meat is shard. are you saying hammer with a sctrewdriver work around in there.will the bb threads be ok?[ally]. after its outits in the bin as change to 122 . for a triple chainset.pardon should have said removal job.whats left of the cup is flush with the outside of the shell so i would have thought there is still 8mm depth in there.plastic cups are a bad idea i reckon, every one knows plastic looses its plasticiser with age and solvents .

  • its ok,im taking it to my lbs when i get the new bb and will watch and learn'eth them break it out
    thankyou for your interest EL_sabor.

  • Put flathead screwdriver in from opposite side of bb, hammer down so plastic splits, remove snapped plastic parts.

  • ok

  • Usually on like shimano un26(one I can think of with a plastic cup) it has 2 parts like this.

The other side will come out and leave the plastic bit exposed to give a whack but don't hammer down towards the threads and try to avoid hammering into the pedal arm end and damaging the first few threads. From the opposite side any minor damage to the very last threads shouldn't be a major issue.

Also try unscrewing it with the other side out as it could have been wedged in tighter by the other side pressing against it.

  • yes tis all common sense now.removing the plastic cup is not an issue now,its expendible obviously now. the prob i have now the L hand thread dr side won't turn even with a long torque
wrench ,so if you have any additions to my next plans please let me know.wrench and lump hammer or wrench with a 900mm long scaffold pole slipped over it and if needs it, jump on it !
making sure i havent cocked up and it is to be turned clockwise to remove.thanks clockwise +el saba and i will think of the next owner's and copper slip it.

  • long torque wrench

These are designed to limit the torque so you don't overtighten when doing things up. Never needed when undoing/removing something. You should be turning it in the direction you pedal to undo it and backpedal to tighten it up. Tool looks like this, sometimes it's just the end part with a socket/inch spanner part on the back.

  • yes mate cheers, that is what i am using but deff will need to increase leveridge. the plastic cup shredding must be a common problem.thanks

  • update.lbs broke his wrench trying to unscrew after heating but suspected incorrect direction of turning circle.
local car tyre place using air powered torque driver 'clockwise' job done a good'n.cheer's

  • Yup, an air powered impact wrench will just about shift anything, usually without damaging it as well.
Old BB's are a PITA, and plastic cups should never have been invented.
