• I'm currently winning a Shimano Ultegra kitted-out bike on eBay and this is all good as the price is great.

But... the Shimano levers are not to my taste.

Thinking about picking up some cheap Campagnolo levers and using those, which raises the question...

Is it possible to mix the levers from a Campagnolo groupset with the gears from a Shimano groupset?

  • I have never tried this so don't know much about it. I understand the answer is "NO" but actually "yes" depending what you want to do. I have not researched it and someone will come along who knows all about it no doubt, but they call it shimergo, and quick googling gives:

    http://jefaisduvelo.wordpress.com/2013/04/13/shimergo-conversion-campagnolo-veloce-10-spd-powershift-ergos/

  • Yes, look here: Ergo levers 9 speed on Shimano drivetrain with Campagnolo rear derailleur. The Shiftmate makes everything compatible and works a treat. For 10 speed you don't even need it, as you can get a Campag spaced, Shimano splined cassette

  • That's cheating... it's the rear derr where the pain is.

  • If you want I have a Campagnolo Daytona derailleur I can sell... :-)
Generally speaking with a rear Shimano derailleur things get more complicated, but not impossible

  • I'm running campy 10 sp shifters with Shimano rear mech and sram 9 sp casette+chain. Worked ok with the hubbub cable routing but flawlessly since installing a shiftmate.

  • It will work most of the time but can be a bit sluggish at times from what I've seen. Used an Ultegra rear mech and Centaur shifters. Only really fucked about in the middle of the cassette for the short time I rode it.

  • yup easy peasy, the CTC guy and Roberts have been championing this for years in 9 speed. You need to clamp the cable in an unorthodox position to change the leverage at the rear mech.

Otherwise of course you can use the leverage pulley adjusters as above. It's the kind of thing that Spa and St John street will keep.

Do bear in mind that you can't let anyone else work on this hybrid drivetrain without warning them- they may replace the cable in the standard orientation if they are not mechanically skilled up to ninja grade (ahem).

  • Do you even LFGSS?

Which Groupset thread has about a million tales of these combinations.

    le merge..

    le merde!

  • Don't merge!

Over-merging means that when people search for specific things like this, we find nothing.

"Which Groupset" doesn't say a thing about "Mix and match groupsets". All it tells me is that if I knew nowt and needed to know which brand to go with, or which version to go with... that conversation might help.

But... if I want to put different components together, I would never think of looking in that conversation.

  • How does that shiftmate thing above work then? It all looks pretty concentric to me. I can't see how that would change the cable pull ratio? What am I missing? Reminds me of the thing I used to have on my MTB mech back in the day:

  • Yup - as above it can be done.

11speed is simplest as the spacing for Shimano and Campag is the same on the cassette.
The derailleur pull is different though - I would suggest using Campag levers AND rear mech (Shimano front mech + Shimano chainset should work fine)

  • Vero has a Roberts set up with the following:
Campag Levers (I can't rember if 10 or 11 speed)
    Stronglight Triple Cranks
    Campag triple front mech
    Pie sized 9 speed cassette
    Shimano XT rear mech

  • ^ eggsagtly. Probably 10 speed shifters. Campag front shifters are good that way, they're not really indexed and can do doubles or triples.

There's a chart somewhere if you google shimergo (I'm on phone, can't be arsed) that shows the cable pull vs. cassette spacing of different brands and speeds.

  • So you think I can get these https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/260470/#comment12028952
and that would work on my 9 speed Shimano cassette. Ideally get a Campag rear mech?

  • Don't think 11speed shifters and 9speed cassette will work...

although this: http://www.ctc.org.uk/cyclists-library/components/transmission-gears/derailleur-gears/shimergo suggests it might - if you use a shimano rear mech..

  • Highpath Engineering has aleady done all the work. Handy table here:
    http://www.highpath.net/highpath/cycles/info/rear.html

  • Dredging this to report that 10s ergos will indeed work flawlessly with a shimano RD and 8s cassette, standard cable routing. Have ditched the 9s chain & cassette as they were fubar, and no longer need the shiftmate for this setup.

  • I have a few bikes setup like this. Works really well. I've found old Suntour FDs are pretty good for front shifting doubles, usually sub-compact in my case.

You should be able to run Shimano 9sp with Shimano rear mech, Hubbub clamped, and 10sp Ergos, or 9sp Shimano with Shimano rear mech clamped normally with 11sp Ergos, optimising the centreline for the 5th cog. I've seen it work well a few times now.

  • Bearing in mind you can sell an ultegra group set for up to 200 used on eBay and buy a new 10 speed Veloce groupset for around 350 which includes new cables etc etc Does it make that much economic sense? A pair of decent campag shifters can cost over 100 used?

  • Economic sense?? Blasphemer!
