    Exal XR2 36h.

built up the wheels in arup's space. unfortunately the rims are not manufactured to the highest standards and getting tyres on/ off is a nightmare. couldn't fit a wired bead gatorskin on the rear. snapped four tyre levers so am leaving it for now; with phil 20t cog:

thing i'm most pleased with are the stronglight 107 track cranks just arrived from hilary stone. paired with a semi-matching stronglight 107 1/8 53t chainring off ebay and some steel stronglight bolts:

picked up a Kalloy aero post from Big H but unfortunately too short and as such is for sale. would have looked nice:

    so that leaves

    • bottom bracket (asked a question here)
    • pedals (french thread required, planning clips and straps)
    • post (27.2 with 20cm free above insertion)
    • saddle (not too fussed as this will be a short ride bike)
    • stem (needs to be long as the TT is short for me at 56cm, instead of a 59cm. any suggestions for a 140 1" quill at 0deg? i.e. right angle)
    • bars and tape (will decide once stem clamp known)
    • lockring
    • tyre i can fit on rear wheel
  • Great looking frame, the build looks nice and classy. It might be worth giving the gatorskin and good stretch if you haven't already, the last one I had was a nightmare to fit and then bead wouldn't even sit on the rim properly, after some stretching and swearing it did eventually fit.

  • Would be interested in the seatpost if you're selling it?

  • ^^
yeah lovely frame, wanted a steel track for town riding since my first build (a 501 fixed conversion).
thanks, want to keep it mostly period (80s).
gatorskin on the rear is just not happening, tried two. the front wheel (same model rim, Exal XR2) took two that the rear didn't - with a LOT of effort and technique. it's a problem i'll solve last.

  • Fair enough, I look forward to seeing it built up.

  • very elegant frame. can't wait to see you turn it into 80s bike.( but noiser you said the inspiration was that hhsb condor, did you change your mind in the process? )

  • the curved bridge is lovely

  • Love those cranks; easy enough to get them re-threaded to ISO, which would make sourcing pedals less of a PITA.

  • As for the bottom bracket, JIS is 2mm shorter than ISO: ie 107mm ISO = 105mm JIS.

Search MDCC_tester's posts using "sheldon" and "taper" for an explanation.

  • Yes! Love that bridge too!

Less inspiration more overall look. I suppose I have changed though. May end up with risers as the frame is small...

Yeah rethreading is an option, but I've just found some SR French thread track pedals on the bay. Need clips and straps now; anyone got some for sale?
I've never ridden fixed with them before, let alone brakeless. I want to be able to ride this in normal shoes, plan is to be my primary A-B town bike.
If I don't get on with them then rethreading for clip in is likely. Shame to do that though.

Cheers. Sheldon says ISO on JIS will sit 4.5mm further out, unless I'm mistaken. Where has 2mm come from? (On phone so will read your suggestion later, thanks! X)

Ideally I'd want a sealed 107 ISO bb. Not Michelin Primato though it's donkey. Anyone?

Sheldon said he'd never has an issue ISO on JIS, and that the taper-grind problem is nullified somewhat thanks to sealed bbs (not needing regular service).

  • sell them cranks to TM :)

real nice frame you got there!

  • what for? link link x

  • Im gonna get some of these clips next week, free delivery and they they have a nicer shape than all the other clips I've used. Been using them everyday since I got them. Let me know if you want in on the order

  • 7.5 - 8ish. maybe a bit small for ya

  • indeed!

pedals arrived from Poland. SR track, french threaded, really good nick:

kalloy post too short (still available people who wanted to buy it!) so picked up a really light planet x superlight on offer. got a concor light from a friend. i've never ridden on one but like the look, so it'll be what makes the (first) finished build:

fitted a beastly 150mm pro chrome - part of the planet x order - and some alps industrial company 'road champion' drops i had. they're really narrow at 38. like the saddle, i'll see how they feel once the built:

so the stem and bars aren't 80s but i don't really care; the wheels aren't and never will be.

i installed a 107 iso bb (113 shown) and there was chainring rub, so i've ordered a 111 centaur which i really hope will give enough clearance. quite worried about the chainline when the cranks are on. the phil cog sits narrow, so spacers may be needed. not the end of the world.

  • 111 centaur too narrow. annoyingly. have ordered a 115 tifosi, and am having the BB threads tapped as they were in a bit of a state.

noticed the drive side crank arm's mount (taper hole) is not in the best shape. im worried it'll sit flush... which would mean i'll need to get a fucking JIS bb. probably a result of over torqueing the (ISO) crank on to JIS bbs over the past 30 years.

switched the wired bead tyres for folding, which went on much, much easier. 28s clear nicely (photos when frame's back with me).

  • Such a lovely frame. Is it 56TT x 59ST?

    Deserves a fancy wheelset imo.

    If you ever sell...

  • thanks! 60x57.
you're right. regret the beater wheelset. will do until spring... maybe winter...

so i've rushed to build this afternoon.

115 bb spindle is a perfect match for the chainring. 1mm spacer behind the cog and the chainline is .5-1mm out.
chainring is very far from round.
    new chain wanted.
    headset waiting to be replaced.

new bar tape needed. wrap job is awful. velox bar wrap feels lovely but it's not pliable enough so there are folds, is there a solution to this i'm missing?

    clips and straps needed. suggestions?

    (crap) photos (album)

  • It looks SO sick...

  • sooo much room for improvement!

  • clips and straps fitted. no toe overlap surprisingly. only ever ridden fixed clipless so eager to see how they feel/ function.

    so yeah... ready to ride!
