• Police are attempting to identity a cyclist who died in a crash on the A61 Dronfield bypass.

The incident happened on the southbound carriageway of the A61 at about 3.20pm on Thursday.
It involved a Citroen C3 and a cyclist who was riding a black and yellow Carrera TDF bicycle.
The cyclist suffered serious head injuries and was taken by air ambulance to Northern General Hospital, in Sheffield, where he later died.
The rider did not have any identification on him and police are appealing to anyone who may be unsure of the whereabouts of a friend or family member who went out for a bike ride and has not returned as expected.
The man was white, aged about 55, 5ft 6ins to 5ft 8ins in height, and with short, grey hair. He had no tattoos but had a small scar to his abdomen. He was wearing black lycra shorts and red cycling shoes.
Anyone with information on his identity should call Derbyshire police on 101.

As a personal appeal, I would ask that anyone in the Sheffield, Chesterfield area or with links to family and friends in the area spread this news. As with any unidentified fatality, the longer it takes to make an identification, the worse it is for the friends and family of the deceased.

  • Shared among my northern friends. That sounds dreadful.

  • this is awful. really makes you think.
(sorry that sounded really trite, but I don't have a better way to word it)

  • Very sad. RIP rider, thoughts with family and friends.

  • Lost on the transfer to the new platform was an update that the cyclist remained unidentified.

Just pulled the following off of the Derbyshire Police website.

Derbyshire police want to thank members of the public for their response to an appeal on the identification of a cyclist who died in a road collision.

The incident happened on a stretch of the A61 near Dronfield on Thursday, July 31, and involved Citroen C3 and a man riding a yellow and black Carrera bicycle.

The cyclist suffered serious head injuries in the collision and died at hospital.

Police investigating the incident released photographs yesterday of the man’s cycle helmet, along with an Evo-fit image, as he was not carrying any identification.

A substantial number of calls from the public have since been received and police now have enough information to progress to the next stage of the investigation.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “The response to our appeal was excellent and the information we received has been of great assistance to the officers in this case.

“We would like to thank those who came forward or shared the appeal online.”

  • Perhaps showing some hope that an identification is forthcoming.

  • Derbyshire Police have now advised that following recent information from the public they are expecting to make a formal identification shortly.

  • Had a proper lump in my throat at the tributes that have been left on London Bridge .

  • Wrong thread

  • The rider has now been formally identified by a relative as Malcolm Cottam.

    Rest in Peace Malcolm
