• sold.

  • wow, nice find! Does it say on the front who made it?
Unfortunately I have a camera buying moratorium but GLWS

  • Thanks Mike.

The little plaque on the front reads 'Photographic Apparatus Chemical Co Limited 15 Barbican, E.C.'

It's not guaranteed that they were actually the people that made the camera, they may simply have been the retailers, though the company did also manufacture and their adverts show a similar line of camera. They went bankrupt in 1890.

  • Bargain!

  • Would you trade for a bike? If so what do you need?

  • Hi Dazaa. It'd be IDEAL to trade this for a bike. I'm after something to ride as a courier in London (fixed or single speed). I'm 5ft 10 so usually ride something around the 56-58cm mark. I've got my tyres sorted and that's it! Let me know if you've got anything to offer me. Many thanks!

  • As requested, here's a few more detailed pictures including the condition of the bellows - neat!

  • Really cool! I've got about 10 of these that have been passed down to me by my grandfather. In all honesty I have never used them and probably won't, I'll sell them soon I think.

  • It looks like an interesting "portable" plate camera.
Sure would be a lot of fun.
    See, for example:
Photographer uses 130-year-old plate camera to capture pictures of modern Britain

Short of making glass plates... A friend some years ago used some photographic paper instead and got some quite interesting results.

  • It's no problem to get sheet film in the right size for this camera. It looks like half-plate size, 4 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches.

I've got one of these, which I use now and then: http://www.earlyphotography.co.uk/site/entry_C178.html

    Good luck with sale.

  • If you went somewhere more specialist with this, I'm sure people would be climbing over each other to pick this up for £150!

  • I agree, Im not too hot on these old 5x4's but definately a good project for someone. They dont make them like they used to! maybe see what Mr Cad say - i think they moved to Victoria last year but their staff are always helpful and their warehouse is full of amazing finds like this. They might even be able to price it for you

  • PMd - see you in the morning
