Show me a rim that does like potholes.
Knocking the dent out is certainly possible, but it depends on how big it is and what caused it. I'd want an expert/professional opinion, bearing in mind the consequences of a rim failing.
Cork and Swisstop yellow pads are for carbon rims; both Koolstop and SwissStop pads are better than the stock ones. The different compounds offer a trade-off between braking and durability: check their websites for an explanation.

You can flatten the dent by grabbing the rim at the bulge with a large adjustable spanner and pushing it gently inwards... it does a better job than a hammer.
Alloy rims = normal pads... no need to go fancy

Gotta love this forum - thanks for the info guys. I like the adjustable wrench idea, I guess a g clamp with a thin flat piece of wood to even the load would work too, I'll give that a go...
So i've just noticed a small bulge in the braking surface on the rear rim, and have read that these rims do not like pot holes much!
I came across a post on another forum mentioning taking a plastic hammer to iron the bulge out. I can't see any other way...
also - are funky koolstop salmon or swissstop yellow or even zipp cork brake pads better for use on campags polished rims? my current standard black pads are working OK - but the rim is a bugger to clean with all the brake dust embedding itself into the braking surface!
