1 x 1 1/8 nightmare

  • Hello,

basically I'm planning to buy different parts for my dream bike. F+F I'm using is Cinelli Gazzetta Bel Rosso 60cm, which has 1 1/8 fork. I wanted all the bearings on my bike to be Dura Ace, but Dura Ace don't make 1 1/8 headset. There is the NJS one, which is 1". I really want to use it along with my Cinelli XA Quill Stem (22.2mm) which will obviously only fit in to 1" forks. Is there a way to do this? (Please refrain from answers such as "no, get a different bike; etc.")

    I found this:
    http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/alloy-shim-to-fit-1-inch-222-mm-insert-quill-stem-to-1-1-8-inch-forks-prod430/

does anyone have any experience with it? Can't work out how it would work..
I don't want to use an A-head stem, because it looks really ugly to me... I like my bike slim and those stems just make them look really bulky.

Is there a way I would be able to use the Dura Ace headset on the setup?

    Please help!

  • The shim you linked too goes inside the fork steer tube before you slot the quil stem into it. You would still need to get a threaded fork or clamp above the headset like an ahead stem does.

I can think of a few 1 1/8 threaded headsets but the forks aren't threaded so unless you plan to swap/modify them to make them threaded it's not going to work.

    ect ect list goes on

I think it's going to come down to a choice of which parts you like most/least to sacrifice.

Maybe? Have seen a few of these on builds that didn't look totally "ahead".

  • I don't think you should get a different bike, but I do think you should embrace modern technology and use a 1 1/8th ahead stem along with a 1 1/8th threadless headset :-)

    Lol.

You can't make the setup you describe work.

Stop crywanking over dura ace and get a proper 11/8th set up.

  • Haluska538, there is no way to make your current frame, current forks and a 1" headset work together.

Threading your current forks, using a non-DA headset and putting a shim on the Cinelli stem might work but as equally might not because in the days of quill stems steerer tube internal diameter was kept constant, nowadays less so so the shim may not be thick enough to take up all the difference or may be too thick.

An incredibly simpler way for you to get the effect you desire would be to get rid of your 1 1/8" fork and get a 1" fork then to fit a set of headtube reducer shims to your frame followed by your desired DA 1" headset.

I have a similar set upon my Principia Track Jet.

Disclaimer: There is no logical reason for doing this, if your frame will take a 1 1/8" aheadset you should use that because it is a far superior set up. I did it so I could have a Cannondale Track-esque skinny steel fork in a fat ali frame.

  • Your dream bike will remain just that.

    that actually looks pretty good!

  • Have you tried an inverse shim?

  • If a Gazzetta is your dream bike I recommend a dream upgrade.

I considered that one and also Nitto NJ-89, but I still wouldn't be able to use the DA headset :(

Have you tried an inverse shim?

Which particular one do you have in mind?

If a Gazzetta is your dream bike I recommend a dream upgrade.

    What is your dream bike?

Thank you all very much for the responses! I think if I had to sacrify one of the components, it would be the fork. Then I could get a 1" threaded fork, which means I could use the DA headset HP-7410 using shims for the headtube and also my Cinelli XA Quill Stem, but I couldn't find a 1" fork that would fit or look nice on the 60cm red frame!

  • Have you tried an inverse shim?

    ha!

  • Of course putting Shimano on a Cinelli is just wrong :-)

  • well my plan was to use Italian Geometry and Japanese Components + Drivetrain. This is my plan:

    ITALIAN
    By Cinelli:

    • Frame and fork (Cinelli Gazzetta Bel Rosso 60cm)
    • Stem (XA)
    • Handlebar (Criterium 65-40)
    • Seatpost (?)

    By Selle San Marco

    • Concor Supercorsa

    By Fizik

    • Bartape (Black Soft Touch)

    JAPANESE
    By Shimano (Dura Ace)

    • Headset (HP-7410)
    • Bottom Bracket (BB-7710)
    • Hubs (HB-7710-F 36H + HB-7710-R 36H)
    • Cranks (FC-7600)

    By Izumi

    • Chain (Model-V Super Toughness)

    By H Plus Son

    • Rims (Polished TB-14)

    By Hoshi

    • Spokes (Aero Spoke)

    By MKS

    • Track pedals with double toe clips+straps

    **
    GERMAN**
    By Continental

    • Tyres (Gatorskin)
  • but I couldn't find a 1" fork that would fit or look nice on the 60cm red frame!

That's because the industry has moved on (for the better). Just get over it and learn to love threadless headsets. You say you want Dura-ace everything, but then why not a Dura-ace seatpost? You say you like everything to be slim, but the Gazetta is a modern steel frame with oversized tubes. It's all just arbitrary rules in your head.

Keep the fork, and use the extra cash to buy a Nitto ct-80, I think those are super sexy on steel frames.

  • basically I'm planning to buy different parts for my dream bike. F+F I'm using is Cinelli Gazzetta Bel Rosso 60cm...

...**(Please refrain from answers such as "no, get a different bike; etc.") **

    Shan't.

Sell it and get this instead if you want to cover it in NJS part to get the credential you sought for.

  • I only wanted Dura Ace bearings... The geometry components were meant to be Italian and the drivetrain Japanese... I know Gazzetta isn't exactly slim, but I love the geometry, the colour, I love Cinelli, so I thought it could be sorted out. I still haven't bought the frameset...

Basically now I'm looking for a metallic red frameset with slim tubes 1" threaded fork, 35mm rake or less available in 58-60cm sizes and price less then £400. Oh and aesthetically I really don't it when the top of a fork looks flat like this:
    https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6bRT7pftK0k/TtDKMzR1f_I/AAAAAAAAFCs/My4cSV8jWnc/s512/IMG_2712.jpg

I prefer more aero look, such as this:
    http://www.somafab.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/soma_fork_es_red.jpg

And then I really don't like a welding on a seat tube such as this:

    http://hilarystone.com/images/sale%20images/frames/chrome-track-on-whls.jpg

    and much prefer these:

Thanks all for your help and understanding! :)

  • I think your best bet of building this impossible dream is a custom frame and fork built to spec otherwise I can see it working without comprimise.

  • I only wanted Dura Ace bearings...

What's special about the Dura Ace bearings that you couldn't get with a normal headset?

Like markxrat said, get a custom frame if you're that anal about how you want your bike to look.

    Madness!

  • Just get a 80's/early 90's steel track frame in your size, paint it red and load it up with your beloved japanese parts. It aint hard.
