  • There is a meeting next week with TfL (See below for outcome of this meeting*) about the proliferation of 'Cyclists stay back!' stickers on all sorts of vehicles, and how this is another stick to beat cyclists with and an excuse for drivers not to bother using their nearside mirrors.

(We have heard that these stickers are are being seen across England now)

The Road danger Reduction forum, LCC, Borough Cycling Officers, TABS, CTC and Roadpeace wrote a letter of complaint to TfL and they are meeting us to discuss this. We would like them to remove stickers from all vehicles that are not HGVs and to consider alternative wording

I don't mind advice such as:

    Though ideally stickers should say:

Do you think there is value in some sort of sticker (since so many riders do pass on the nearside)?

    What should they say?

*We met TfL who agreed to

    1. Ask FORS to remove stickers from small vehicles
    2. Remove stickers from buses until a new wording is agreed
    3. Write to other fleet owners requesting they remove stickers
    4. Agree new wording for stickers on large lorries and buses.
    5. Issue guidance with the new stickers on their use
    6. Create a tfl web page with advice about the stickers
  • It should be on the inside of the cab and say "Get off the phone and look out for cyclists"

  • Cyclists - Why the fuck are you undertaking?

  • The wording is fine.

  • "Does my bus look big in this?"

  • ...of course.

  • Have you considered...

    ?

  • What should they say?

I've wondered whether something like "The driver of this HGV has had cycle training. Please help him keep you safe" would be more positive. Obviously that's too long so it would need condensing.

I agree that the cyclists stay back stickers are shite.

  • I don't mind the 'beware of passing...' one. On HGV and buses, not on minicabs etc.

'Stay back' ones can get to fuck.

  • I've wondered whether something like "The driver of this HGV has had cycle training. Please help him keep you safe"

We have these on Gordon's Tipper trucks which are a little wordy and target both cyclists and drivers with a view to sharing responsibility:

I can't read those, could you embiggen them?

  • Who will make some tiny 'Motorists - stay fat' ones for the back of my bike?

  • 'cyclists stay...' stickers could easily be jammed;

    awesome,
    thin,
    sexy,
    up all night...

  • ^^ there a pretty good idea, would work better on the side of busses though

  • I can't read those, could you embiggen them?

Full texts of all the tips for drivers here (pdf)
    and for cyclists here

    We have these as postcards.
PM me if you want some cards

Cheers, I remember these being discussed in a previous thread. I'd not seen the abridged stickers though.

  • I don't mind the wording so long as the law stays clear that you can coat your van/truck with stickers and they don't absolve you in any way. The use of them to push the blame onto the cyclist is what I'm against which is essentially what the lack of using mirrors has confirmed.

I hope the meeting goes well, I remember seeing somewhere tfl had said "it's too expensive to peel them off" which is a load of cobble when you think of all the regular maintenance work they do on buses adding 2min with a scraper or whatever to the next service or the anti graffiti workers get busy ect.

  • we should print some awesome stickers and go around covering them up

  • Have you considered...

    ?

It was really only a matter of time for them to get into road haulage, the capitalist bastards.

  • We also need 'Cyclists: Don't lean!' stickers.

  • How about ones saying 'If you can read this you're to close'

  • you're.

  • I'd like…

Motorists - If you can read this…How does my arse look?

    (Pert. Pert is the answer.)

  • you're.

    Also, 'too'.

  • I am a bit confused by the stickers. Is there a measured danger in drafting such vehicles, as they imply? I suppose an emergency stop could lead to a nasty bump but it doesn't seem like a lethal risk.
