Buying a bike in France - import taxes?

Posted on
  • Bonjour.

What's the situation with buying a new bike in France (or anywhere in Europe for that matter) and bringing it back to the UK via Eurostar?

Specifically; can I just bring it through hassle-free like I'd do with cheese and wine or used bikes... or do I have to deal with import tax, extra VAT, paperwork and the like (as I do when travelling back from USA).

  • Within the EU I think you're ok.

    Some reading:
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htm

  • Not tax at all, free circulation of goods and people within the EU.

  • Woohoo! Thanks!

Better buy it quick before UKIP get elected then :)

  • too late

  • I confirm no taxes!

  • ukip = expensive bike .......

  • Make sure to book the bike onto the Eurostar. We had some issues despite being booked on travelling to Ansterdam...

  • Woohoo! Thanks!

Better buy it quick before UKIP get elected then :)

Or before this idiot of Lepen control the country, whichever happen the first (je parie sur la france pour ca)

Bring me back some saucisson please ;-)
