  • So many of you remember (and like) my Cannondale Rack, which was a 1995 2.8. Well I had that built up for a year and a bit now and it was great, especially with the SRAM trigger shifters. I ended up taking the SRAM running gear off the Cannondale for the ratty Mongoose IBOC build, and the front rack is going on that as well. The Cannondale frame ended up just sitting in my garage.

I've been wanting another road bike, especially now it's coming up to winter and the thought of riding wet hills (mainly descents) using my CX bike with canti's wasn't very appealing. My last road bike was a steel Viner with 7 speed friction. I sold that frame to build up the CX bike.

So anyway, here I am rebuilding the Cannondale up. Parts wise it is going to be a bit mismatched, but almost all Campagnolo. I've only ever used SRAM ergo shifters, so this will be interesting. I plan to build it up using a SRAM / Shimano wheel set and a Shimano 9 speed rear derailleur using a Jtek ShiftMate so I can run Campy shifters. This will allow me to run a bigger cassette than Campy offer, and let me use a wheel set I already have.

What I have at the moment is:

    • 1995 Cannondale 2.8 (54cm)
    • pre-2001 Campagnolo silver Veloce 9 speed ergo shifters
    • 2001-ish Campagnolo silver Centaur crankset and bottom bracket
    • 2001-ish Campagnolo silver Centaur front derailleur
    • Campagnolo silver threaded headset (unsure of year)
    • SRAM / Shimano black wheel set (from a Giant TCX, originally on my CX build for the first build).
    • 2010-ish Campagnolo black Veloce brakes
    • Black Kalloy seat post
    • old Time ATAC pedals
    • Flite saddle

    I need to buy:

    • bars and stem. I'm going to go threadless with a quill to ahead adaptor. I've done this on my CX bike and it's fine. It will allow me to run compact bars without having to buy Soma HWY 1's / Nitto etc. plus I don't think I have a quill stem I can use. I'll be getting black bars and stem.
    • tyres. Probably going to run 25mm Panaracer Pasela gumwalls
    • cassette. Want something pretty big range. Like up to a 32t because I'm not running a compact crankset.
    • bar tape, which will be Lizardskins DSP. I love this tape.
    • cables and chain.

I also plan to get the frame stripped back to raw aluminium. I have bought these "period correct" decals for it.

Here's what I am hoping it will (kind of) look like.

  • Even (kind of) close to that will be pretty sweet,

need to get my finger out and get my capo build moving again...

  • sram do good wide range cassettes for a song and shimano spacing.

raw is a good look. looking fwd!

  • About time! Will follow closely.

  • Subbed. This is how mine will go next year if I can be arsed with triathlons.

Are you gonna get a carbon fork?

Keeping the original carbon fork. I have a compact Deda bar, threadless stem and a quill to ahead adaptor sitting in my PBK basket waiting for my pay to go through so I can order them next week.

I'm going to strip the frame this weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to take it in to get stripped back to raw next week.

  • Also, because I'm a (music) nerd, I want to get a decal of this made up for the frame.

The band New Brutalism use this as a logo of sorts. They also make aluminium instruments (and other cool stuff) under the name Obstructures.

  • subcribed

  • Oh *those *kind of instruments. Makes more sense now.

I was picturing scalpels and forceps and things.

  • Nah, they're made out of stainless steel. Doesn't have the same sustain.

  • Stripped it back to just the frame in preparation to have it stripped back to raw.

    With stickers

    Without

I can't be bothered taking the Cannondale decals off right now. I also can't get the headset cups out and one if the bolts for the bidon cage is stuck and it is just turning but not coming out. Apparently it can be an issue with aluminium frames with the bosses coming loose. Not sure what I'm going to do yet.

  • Also, I think it was originally painted red.

  • ^^Is the whole boss loose or might it be the first bit of the bolt that's stripped? If the former, could you inject some epoxy to at least temporarily get it to stick so you can get the bolt out and then replace the boss?

  • Dropped the frame off to my friend's shop today to get blasted. Hopefully it doesn't take too long. I ended up leaving the bolt in the boss.

These turned up in the post today as well.

  • Some parts ordered...

  • Does the lufguss still hate quill to ahead adapters?

You might have awoken a beast.

  • Probably. As I said before, I run one on my CX bike with no issues. Until I find a nice 1" threadless fork and I'm willing to pay money to change the fork and headset, I'll run the original threaded Cannondale fork with this $15 adapter.

In saying that, I think certain bikes with quill adapters and threadless stems look ugly as shit (usually steel frames with ugly bulky stems), but I think the Cannondale's can pull it off. I think it's the thicker tubing.

  • Good point. I look forward to seeing it on.

Plus you have the practicality of the removable face plate.

  • DUMB QUESTION So... talking with a friend last night. He has some 1" threaded straight blade carbon fork with an aluminium steerer. The steerer tube is quite long and the threaded section probably won't be long enough for my frame. If I bought a 1" threadless headset, could I cut off the threaded section and use these forks?

  • As long as you've got enough to clamp a stem on, I cant see why not.

  • Does 1" refer to the outer diameter of threaded fork steerers? If so then yeah I think you should be able to.

  • Alright. If it fits and I run it and it breaks and I lose my teeth it's your fault.

  • So the parts I now have.

Still need to get the rear derailleur and swap some saddles so it can get the Flite from my CX bike.

I also cleaned up the wheels ready.

    Parts to buy:

    • Tyres and tubes
    • Cassette
    • Cables
    • Chain
    • Bar tape
    • JTek ShiftMate
    • Bidon cage(s)
    • Bottom bracket (I have Campy one, but it may be stuck in a frame)

  • Oh and I might buy some black PDW Full Metal Fenders. Kind of hate running clip on mudguards.
