Wow, impressive work! Would love to see a pic with the instrument on the bike.

Bowie looks v.pleased with his new bike.

Jokes aside, the bike looks great.

Fedt! Are you planning a production run?

Thank you.
I haven't got a double bass, and we haven't been able to use his as it was a surprise for him. ;-) But we did have the measurement in mind when designing the bike. It will look something like this:
We are going to build him something specific to hold the instrument, but we will wait until he has had some experience with the bike.
We love building utility bikes and would like to make more for customers, but we have no intention competing with Bullitt or others...

This is exactly what I need!! I play upright bass too and am sick of having to use troublic pantsport to cart it about. I'll be watching with much interest.
I'd been thinking about some sort of sidecar due to the enormity of the cargo but I'd love to see this in action.
Subbed!

cool Thoma. Do you have knowledge about how to transport it? I have heard different opinions. Does it need to be on the side or can it lay on the back? As long as the neck is supported? I used to play guitar, but I guess an upright bass is more fragile?

As long as it has no pressure on the neck/headstock it should be fine on it's back. I'd be a bit worried about the neck protruding in front though in case of SMIDSY which is why I'd always thought of some kind of side-car arrangement.

There needs to be some kind of balance struck between it being securely held and some kind of suspension/padding/shock absorption. They're held together by the string tension. The bridge and sound-post are fairly sensitive and can be knocked out of place pretty easily. I've had that happen on stage and it's not pretty.

Thanks mate. I will look into this. When we get it back for paint I might swing by the music academy and have them try it out for me. Then take some measurement for some sort of suspension rig.

Sounds like a good plan. Keep us updated on your progress. I'll be very interested to see how it goes.

Any update on this?

Just got it back for paint. Paint arrives tonight. Dunno when I will be having time for actually paint it though.
I couldn't help myself and took it for a spin the other day. Rides like a dream

Looks great! Keep us posted. I want to see it being ridden with a bass on board!

I will do a thread explaining the complications of making a track ended frame into sliding disc dropout bike. But I am basically working on cutting the dropouts from 6068 t6 aluminum and respacing the rear end to fit 135mm disc hubs. Then adding racks n stuff. Poor mans version of Ed's Elephant.

We just had Oskar's utility bicycle back for an upgrade of the dropouts. This meant that I had the opportunity to take some photos. I didn't get around to doing that when it was all freshly painted.
Also we got him a new Kojak 2.0" rear tyre... Crazy comfy...

...definitely looks faster than a bullitt :)

How does it look with a bass on board?
My friend and I have just finished our second cargo bike. It is similar to this http://www.lfgss.com/thread108881.html but a lot of new details and solutions have been implemented.
The bike is for Gundersen's nephew. He is a young aspiring double bass player, and his parents have had enough of driving him around town with his giant instrument. So our task was to build him a bicycle that could solve this.
Judging by this photo taken yesterday, we accomplished this. One happy camper it seems. ;-)
