Servicing bearing hubs - what's wrong ?

Posted on
  • Decided to strip and service my hubs as they were a bit rough. Stripped cleaned and inspected, with no pitting to cone , cup or bearing. Re greased and put back together. Made sure the axle was centred and tightened the cone finger tight making sure no play. Locking nut put back. Trouble is now, the wheels are actually rougher than before.
What have I done wrong ?

  • Quick release or bolt up?

If Quick release the axle compresses so you actually need more play before you tighten.

You could have tightened the lock nut up and its also tightened the cone.
You need to hold the cone with one cone spanner then tighten the lock nut against it.

There will be numerous videos on youtube, but as far as I can tell you have somehow managed to tighten the cone indirectly or you are using a QR.

  • did you really clean it all out
sometimes old gunk can contain particles which will grind

did you lose a bearing ?
did you put the bearing cage (?) back in the right way round ?

  • Yep, thoroughly cleaned out. 20 bearings in front and 18 in rear

  • More grease

  • I think you've got one too many or one too few bearings in there!
