  • For sale, 1984 Holdsworth Elan road bike

I picked this up about 6 years ago in good nick and used it for my daily hack for around 5 of those. It’s just been rebuilt but I have neither the space or need for another bike. Since completion I’ve done about 25 dry miles to double check all is in good working order.

    F+F: Reynolds 531, 54cm seat (c-t-t), 56cm toptube (c-t-c), 126mm rear
Headset: Stronglight A9 alloy (less than one years old)
B/B: Shimano UN55 (less than one years old)
    Mechs: Shimano 105
    Brakes: Shimano 105
Shifters: Shimano 105 14 speed friction and index
    Chainset: SR 165mm
    Cassette: Shimano 7 speed
    Rims: Mavic Open S.U.P CD
    Hubs: Shimano 105 7speed
    Spokes: DT Swiss
    Tyres: Continental Ultra 25c
    Stem: GB Avanti Biba
    Bars: GB Premiere Marque
    Tape: Cinelli Cork (new)
    Seatpost: Strong Japan 27.2mm
    Saddle: Selle
    Pedals: SR

The tyres look like new and it’s had new cables, rear pads and inner tubes.

Although used in all weather it’s always been stored in the dry, unfortunately for 2 years it was being locked up on London Bridge bike platform and the frame has picked up a fair amount of scuffs and scrapes. Very few of those are deep but some of the decals are showing fair signs of wear. There is a dent on the seat-tube behind the mech clamp, it’s been there since I got the bike and has caused no problems or showed any signs of worsening. I did look into having the frame restored but the overwhelming response was to leave it patina’d so other than treating any surface rust with genolite and giving it several coats of wax polish to protect it I’ve left it as is.

The original mismatched groupset has been upgraded over the years to full (except original SR chainset) Shimano 105 (1055/1056 era) and is all in very good condition.

The wheels were new and unused when I put them on the bike (original owner had them built for a project that didn’t get going). Recently I put them on my new bike for a few weeks whilst waiting for my new rims, and when I went to the shop to collect my RS30’s he asked me why I was replacing quality wheels with cheap shit! There’s still plenty of life in the rims, when servicing the hubs I noticed some pitting on the front cones. I’ve introduced a little play in the front hub to keep it smooth but you would want to replace the cones at some point.

The stem, bars, seatpost, saddle and pedals are all original items.

Everything moves freely, all threads in excellent condition, all service items recently replaced with new parts.

Rides very nicely, NEW LOWER PRICE £230 ono, located in Whitechapel

NOTE: chain in pics was for photos only and has been replaced with one of correct length. Sloppy bar tape on left had side has been tidied, Flite saddle has been replaced with the original Selle. Will get some close up shots of groupset soon.

    Cheers

  • Not in a huge rush to sell but for anyone interested i'm open to sensible offers

  • Interested. Is the 54cm measurement c-t-c or c-t-t?

  • Interested. Is the 54cm measurement c-t-c or c-t-t?

    Hey,

    It's 54cm c-t-t, roughly 52.5cm c-t-c

Measuring again the top tube is actually more like 56cm c-t-c.

If you want stand over height or anything else let me know.

Just got home from work now so i'll try and put up some close up shots of the drivetrain tomorrow

    cheers

  • Hello, is this pick up only or can it be delivered?

Pick up is always preferable not least so you can view it first.

Saying that i have a frame and wheel box that between the two i'm sure i can get the bike into to, if your happy to arrange and pay for delivery i can have it wrapped up nicely

    cheers.

    Hi,

original catalogue quotes 24lbs (10.8kg), i would estimate mine to be about 0.5-1 kg lighter due to some lighter components than factory. It would go in two boxes taped together that i'm guessing would weigh around 1-2kg.

Probably best to say 12-13kg to be sure

    cheers

  • Really hoping to not put this on ebay, sensible offers over £200 considered

  • what's the standover height?

  • This is a really great price (£200-£235 whichever price you end up selling.)

Real shame it hasn't gone yet! I thought it'd go fast.

  • what's the standover height?

    Hey,

I'm not home till late but i'll measure as soon as i'm back. I'm 5,10" but with a small inside leg (30" jeans) and it fits me comfortably.

    Thanks mate.

Now that it's going so low i'm just hopeful it goes to a good home, new front cones, toe clips and a selle turbo and the bike would be perfect

  • What I see is that there's a surge in people buying new bikes (I think I read during last years many new people are on the road cycling), probably thanks to the Cycle2Work scheme and less people getting 'vintage' or used ones.

Where I work there's a company that struck a deal with the estate agents handling the whole of the business park so that they can come locally in the plaza and fix commuters bikes. I tried to book a full service for the Gazelle. Turns out they had an overwhelming demand and actually planning to schedule another event next week instead of next month.
Clearly as spring is in full swing more people want to go on their bike, but still, fewer people are getting bargains here on the forums.

Sorry for taking over your post with my rant though :) I'll shut up.

  • Bargain...good frame...good parts..well looked after..pity TT is too long....GLWS

  • PM'd

  • Was dibs called or is it still available? Dibs if it's up for grabs :)
