• Let's see your Dave Yates, and I'll show you mine.

We're currently a four-Yates household so I thought I start a thread in his honour. I'll post pics of mine shortly.

Got a couple of bikes decalled with other marques that I gather may be built by Dave. You Joe Waugh owners let's see those too! I know he builds custom things for Condor, he was making Paris Galibier with super fancy lug extentions on it when I collected my 'winter' bike from him in 2010. My Condor 853 mtb I just bought from SammyDodger is apparently one of his. I like the very light fillet brazing on that, our tagalong and my winter bike, it's very minimal.

My winter bike is the most lively, comfortable and enjoyable ride I have, just lovely.

  • Does the frame I built on his course count?

He also built some frames for the Flying Scot brand in Glasgow and also one of the 'house brands' when he was still in Newcastle, M.Steel (the shop is still there but it no longer builds frames). I think he might have also built frames for the Frontiera brand which was based in Carlisle. He also built a frame for Rapha for one their publicity stunts.

Dave would say that he actually didn't build many of the frames when he was in Newcastle but one of his team did. He would concentrate on the specials, racing frames, tandems etc.

Ps: Dave's opinion of the Paris Galibier frame was it was shit but if that's what the customer wanted, he would build it.

Pps: Dave has opinions on most things to do with cycling :-)

  • Yeah absolutely Dave's pupils' work welcome here too.

Absolutely, haha I could tell he had no time for it.

When we were discussing bits of the build he was doing for me, I was talking about stainless ends which he was ok with, then mentioned the possibilty of a stainless crown. Quick as you like, he goes, 'Are you gonna ride this or hang it on your wall?'
    Funny as fuck really.

  • I have a suspicion my 853 Condor was built by Dave, similarly constructed to your Condor MTB.

  • I used to have this fillet brazed 853 Condor what was very likely to be build by Dave.
It's a fantastic frame with some amazing details. shame it was too long for me on a top tube.

4 Dave Yates bikes in one house, Skully? Share some love :)

This is an awesome thing. Looked like it tracked beautifully behind your bike on Sunday. (Dibs if you everyone to sell it on!)

  • I've owned an M.Steel Diabolo touring MTB and a Joe Waugh road racer, they were both brilliant. My old boss claimed to have commissioned the first Yates tagalong and given him the idea to market them... /bullshit

  • Always loved this:

Still remains my favourite frame of all time. Saw it in the flesh when Dogsballs was riding it.

  • Yeah, look how minty it is in that photo. Gah!

  • Last on my list, and least sure that it was built by Dave, (he mentioned when I met him, without seeing it, that he probably built it). EG Bates 531ST, changed hands a couple of times on here before me. I love it, has been such a great frame. Now has rsx brifters. Running a super granny gear of 27front x 34back.

  • Tagalong

I haven't seen another one of these, are you saying he made a few?

  • Please someone put up a picture of a Donkeys Knob!

Not the aforementioned DK (there was one hanging in his workshop when I built this) but one I made on his excellent course.

  • Here's mine made on his course

  • Yeah, look how minty it is in that photo. Gah!

Got a photo of it now?

  • Here's mine

Also have a yates track bike and a broken yates built condor :(
