Wanted: Lightweight Touring Frame - 60+cm

Posted on
  • Hey all,

Bit of a long shot maybe, but you never know what lurks behind the forums fingertips. So, before I organise a clear out and get a deposit on a custom frame, thought I'd ask here.

I need to get a lightweight touring machine together after trading in my Ti cx frame. Looking for something around the 60-63cm ST and 58-60cm TT mark. Clearances for 28c tyres. 1-1/8th and tall headtube preferred, not too worried about bosses, as I tend to run a saddlebag/bar bag and clip on guards have been fine for me til now, either way an easy add on for any framebuilder.

I have a steel road frame which I can put to use, but if there's something more suited out there, I'd love to know.

I like nice things, so an ideal scenario would be an 853 Roberts compact tourer/audax, Indy fab club racer, 953/Ti summint or t'other.....and for the right thing (ie one of the afore mentioned) if it makes things more interesting I have a couple of frames for potential trades ie,

    This

    Or that

Got a load of other potential trading parts, rapha clobber, cameras, etc which I'll link when I get my shit together.

    Cheers,
    Ben

  • get yourself onto the CTC forums, usually plenty of touring bikes there, some silly prices at times.

  • cheers, Mr B. I'm regularly keeping an eye on ctc amongst others, but as always, here is the first port of call.

  • Strike that it's sold...

  • Gimme an offer and ill consider it :)

Good luck in your search either way.

    Cheers
    B

  • Bjorn, If you're open to offers, I'm in. It's up there, but thought it might be too soon.

    I will be in touch.

  • Bump!

Still interested to hear of anything that might be out there.

  • What rear spacing? Does it have to be steel/ti? Complete bike or just frame?
Thing is I have a '58' Spesh Globe Expert in all black, ally frame/CF forks, rear stays & seatpost, I've been riding a smaller Pro version for the last 5 years as my daily and I bought the larger one for when my shoulders eventually give out.(already got busted wrists so low down riding is painful already) it's 60cm c-c top tube so might well work measurement wise at least.

The expert has the same frame as the pro just had slightly lower spec components, all that said I'm hankering at getting my Raleigh special products titanium converting into an audax bike as that's a 62cm so the front end is a bit forgiving for me(I'm 5ft 11 but I love it)

Anyhow, the globe is absolutely stonkingly mint as I bought it with around 250 miles on it and it has sat in my spare room since. the smaller version I ride does everything, I'm a bit on the big side at 105kg (ex-rugby league 2nd row forward) and I managed to get up the alps on it and descending at 45+mph was fantastic even with panniers.

the 55 with rack/full length guards/2xcages/lights/computer + fairly heavy deore triple & 36 spoke road wheels comes in at approx 11kg. Not uber light but the ride is pretty cushy IMO. It soaks up the bumps and takes a beating & comes back laughing (1 rear hit n run, two side swipes and several low speed downs on ice on the ickle un without any issues at all aside from cosmetic scratches)
I've used 25mm gators but have 32mm Specialized Pro folders and they fly loaded or unloaded.
    EDIT, deffo 130mm rear spacing
    Just a thought anyway.

  • Mr Bump, thanks for the post. Thats some very useful info and the frame sounds like a good practical option. I really loved touring on both Ti and Steel in the past (also meant i had a light winter/bad weather ride) and if the above italian steeds leave the stable, I wont have a real (geared) bike ;) Also, I'm a sucker for something a bit tasty, so really just sussing out anything that might come up here, before i sell everything and pursue a custom frame option.

Im still not 100% fixed on anything. I run 10spd shimano currently, so in terms of parts, spares, swapping things out, etc, it makes sense to run a 130 rear. That said a internal geared hub wouldn't be unappealing, nor would disk brakes.
