Drilling Toptube for internal cable routing

  • Hey guys,

I ride a Dolan pre cursa in the city. I was wondering if I could route the rear breaking cabel through the top tube? Will the material break or is it no big deal?

  • Not worth the risk of frame failure methinks.

  • there might be some kind of reinforcing that you could use or a tube through which you could thread a cable, like the gazelle aa specials and aa supers which is a continuous tube that runs in and out of the top tube, this also strengthens the area round the hole
but it will look ugly, weaken the frame and would not be recommended by most

  • There are 2 issues here, frame integrity and cable routing.

Just about all frames, steel, alu and titanium have holes drilled in them by thebmanufacturers so its certainly possible. Most frames don't fail because of this although of course some do. With appropriate positioning, sizing and drilling of the holes, it should be ok, but you take the risk etc.

Secondly, as the top tube is the only tube to be (normally) sealed at both ends, it would be bugger of a job to thread a cable +/- housing through.

  • Ok thanks for your opinions! The frame doesn't mean too much to me. It's always a bugger to thread a cabel.. Also with modern carbon frames.. It took me 1 hour to get the second one through.
