California touring advice needed

Posted on
  • So I've been planning going touring in the States and struggling to decide my route. I'm currently thinking of cycling the pacific coast: Vancouver - Tijuana

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of the best route to take, places not to miss and those to avoid?

Does anyone know what the prevailing wind does in the part of the world as well ,as that might dictate in part my direction of travel, and also what the climate would be like heading either way over 3 months from mid march - mid june?

    Thanks!

p.s. would help if I could spell California...

  • Having driven a large section of that coastline, I am very jealous. If you get no luck here. have a look at any of the California or Oregon bike forums. I think that will probably be your best source of info.

  • Got a copy of this, pretty amazingly thorough break down of the route

  • Yeah, got a copy of that too and it's been really helpful planning my route, though I'm only going from SF to LA. Good luck and have fun!

  • when are you going through?

  • Flying out on the 17th of April then departing SF on the 18th. Hoping to arrive in LA on the 25th as that's my birthday and I'd like to spend it with my sister (who I'm visiting) rather than on my own

    #csb.

  • You planning on camping or going for motels/ warm showers? I decided I just can't face camping on my own so going to try and use warm showers/ couch surfing as much as possible and then maybe the occasional motel

  • Camping. Campsites are civilised places with showers...

  • Oh no, I mean 'Warm Showers' - the cycle touring version of Couchsurfing

  • Places to avoid: Tijuana

Pacific coast Highway from north of Santa Barbara to Monterrey is just stunning. South of LA to San Diego it's Highway 5 and that's pretty boring. Don't know if an inland route might be better?

  • Oh! Yeah warm showers is something I should actually look at.

  • Forgot to update , planning to go south rather than north, as sounds like the prevailing winds will blow me the whole way. Hopefully flying out to Seattle next Friday, then get the train up to Vancouver and start from there.

Iacomus - thanks for the heads up, will bear it in mind. Was saying Tijuana more as point of reference in Mexico, but will hopefully try and find somewhere a little nice for a night or two.

Warm Showers seems great, got some friends who used it to cycle round Ireland and they had a great time - apart from one strange evening with an enthusiastic naturist and his sauna...

  • Did you leave in the end plexarice?

  • Anyone know of anywhere to rent a road bike in LA for a few days? Preferably in the beach cities....

    Cheers

  • I see a lot of cruiser rental places but anyone know if you can rent half decent road bikes or MTBs from around Indio, CA?

Also, anyone ridden in Joshua Tree National Park and have any decent routes or POIs?

    EDIT: https://pdbikenbrews.com/bike-rentals/ looks decent.
