  • Hi, I've been helping my mum find a rescue dog, and in the process found out about the plight of dogs in parts of eastern Europe. Those that manage to survive the nightmare of life on the streets usually end up in kill shelters.

To be honest I feel pretty helpless, but wanted to do something to help them.

The dogs below are on death row in shelters in Croatia. They only have days left! Click on the pic to find out about them (I've included the death date):

    Du-du (07.03.14)

    Nick (08.03.14)

    Florian (30.02.14?)

    Lyra (30.02.14?)

    Odi (27.02.14)

    Nemo (08.03.14)

    Neal (21.03.14)

    Nickel (17.03.14)

    Nash (23.03.14)

    Nino (10.03.14)

    Norman (22.03.14)

    Sony (13.03.14)

Sadly, you can find many more if you click ADOPT on the Action Aid for Animals site.

Anyway, if you or anyone you know are looking for a dog, please consider these dogs.
Please, please share and spread this around.
    Thanks, Tris.

  • Friend of mine got a street dog from Moscow, looks similar to Odi up there. Amazing dog, well tempered and full of love.

  • Good call
    I hope someone can help.
I know a few people in my area who have got a dog from one of the eastern european rescue projects.
We just picked up an unwanted Staffie, sadly I can't take any more dogs. 5 is quite enough.

  • We have a rescued Viszla from Hungary, Scherrit has one too.

Sydney is a wonderful affectionate hound, and is incredibly fast, he loves coming mountain biking. Very very rewarding.

  • There are so many lovely little cross breeds in Polish shelters. If they only had a doggy passport, I'd rehome one straight away.

I think these all have EU passports.

  • There's a bit at the bottom of each profile which includes whether they have a passport.

  • How can I rescue a dog from Croatia? Their website is a nightmare?
Can they be brought/send to the UK?

  • Check here, some of the dogs are already in the UK

  • Thanks. Wanted to try and save Lyra first.

    This how I understand it:

    • The dogs are in a Croatian public pound with 60 days to go
    • During that time they can be adopted
    • AAfA have rescue shelters (or links with them) in Croatia
    • If you choose a dog they will do a home visit and put a hold on the dog's status
    • Then one of their volunteers in Croatia brings them over here

    See here for details.

If you look on some of the dogs they have been 'reserved' pending transportation to their new home.

    Thanks so much, she's lovely.

She's at the Osijek pound where it seems the vet tries to help out by delaying the dog's death date to give them a bit more time.

  • Cheers, sorry, but it's bit difficult to read into all the details on a mobile device when the clock' ticking for them.

You're right though, their site is a bit of a nightmare. I've spent a lot of time trawling through it recently, so I'm starting to get the hang of it.

  • They have an app, I don't know if this helps:

  • Rescue dog's all the way.

Had :( two border collies. One just passed away a few weeks ago, had him for 12 years, little bit nippy to strangers but the most intelligent rewarding and fit dog I've ever come across.
The other we got as a pensioner (12 years old!) who had been adopted by the rescue place as they didn't think anyone would want such an old dog. He's now 15, fit as hell, looks about 3-4 years old to most people (only vet's and pro dog people can spot he's a lot older), totally lovable but unfortunately a dog of 'limited intelligence', which just makes everything he does LOL funny.

There are so many great dog/ cat rescue places in the UK, plenty more across Europe, but still the problem of people abandoning / abusing / over breeding dogs for ££££ persists :(

  • Yes, it's true, it's a much bigger issue. I just came across these dogs and wanted to try to help them.

Didn't realise you've been cycling with dog, I'd be up for trying this out, let me know next time you head to swinley avec pooch.

  • Reason he's bit people is because as a puppy he was pelted half to death with stones & junk by scummy foster kids and is mostly terrified of humans he doesn't know (fear aggression). Years of training + help + love rendered him a fantastic dog.

  • Jeez if you don't like dogs why the fuck do you go onto a thread about dogs and pick someone up over a comment if you are not trolling?

  • This may sound a little heartless and its is not trolling but what do you think happens to stray animals here?

I like cats and dogs, and most other furry creatures.. just makes me wonder why you have to go that far to get an animal or am I missing something.

  • Doesn't sound heartless you have rise a legitimate question, will see what the natives will say, BrickMan seems to have experiences to tell.

Anyway, I have a different question, when a stray dog ends up with an owner is the dog that become domestic or the owner that became stray?

  • Lynx, I think it's because the state of animal welfare in certain Eastern European countries is far worse than it is here. Personally, I think it makes more sense to get a rescue from this country, but that's just me. There are already a huge number of dogs in shelters in this country, I think they should be taken in before a dog from overseas.

I got my dog from Battersea and he's basically the love of my life. #csb
