Was it their fault? Compensation etc...

Repairing it is likely not a viable option as it would probably cost more than buying another second hand one.
When you were hit were you riding brakeless? If not you've probably got a decent case against the driver, even if you were it's still worth a shot.
Let the police know and go back as soon as possible to check for cctv that may have covered the area, also go to a doctor if you feel injured in anyway, get some fair compensation :)

i was indeed riding brakeless but she turned into my path and being honest brakes wouldnt have made a difference. i got her number and stuff but i found a place in surrey that repairs carbon bikes and wheels and i just hope its not too expensive, at the moment my bike has no insurance (home contents, etc) so im pretty annoyed. luckily i wasnt hurt but before i hit the ground i heard the wheel snap and i felt a sharp pain in my heart :( :(

Does the driver have insurance? Do you have the details. Are you a CTC or British Cycling member?
-
• #6
Report to police. Get insurance details. Claim on driver's insurance for new wheel.

pics plz

Don't repair the damn wheel.
Do what Howard said above.

• #9
Use busted wheel as coffee table.

the driver was insured, i am not a member of any cycling society, thinking of reporting to police, will insurance easily pay out so i can get a new HED3? the wheel is a trispoke so does not work well as a coffee table :(

She commit an offence, there's nothing to think about, report it to the police.
Her insurance should pay for new wheel, and maybe a front brake.
-
• #12
if she's fully at fault, and you can get her to agree to a written account of what happened (it doesn't have to attribute fault, just be an account of movements on the road that she agrees to), then you can send that to her insurance company with a quote for a new wheel, and they should pay up.

All the above, plus check your house insurance for legal costs, and maybe any credit cards or bank accounts you may have sometimes have legal advice included. Must report to police.
-

if youre brakeless i wouldnt have thought you have a leg to stand on as far as a payout from her insurance goes tbh. without brakes your bike isnt essentially road worthy. quote from the highway code "you MUST (this is in red caps in the book) ensure your brakes are efficient. if you dont have them insurers would use that to get out of paying out pretty easily. hope you get it sorted though

That's not to say anyone knows you were riding brakeless...

Look - this isn't difficult.
You were involved in a road traffic collision. You need to report this because it needs to be added to the statistics, at least. You also need to get an incident number. Do you have the license plate for the driver? If yes, the police can give you their insurance details. Or at least tell you if the insurer the driver has given you is their actual insurer.
Now, about getting your wheel sorted. Call to driver - *do you want to pay for my wheel, or do I need to go through your insurers? Your no claims bonus is in jeopardy. * *New wheel is £X. Cough up. Yes these things are expensive. Cough up.
*
If they say no, get straight on to a solicitor (search for the 'solicitors we like' thread). They will try and get you compensation for whiplash as well - it earns them more money. It's up to you if you do this. Are you hurt? How much time dicking around is this going to cost you just because some ass-hat couldn't rise to the responsibility of piloting a one tonne metal box without decking someone else and then somehow thinks it's OK to duck the responsibility for putting things right? Going through a solicitor gives you a paper-work headache. On your death-bed, you aren't going to be thinking 'I wish I spent more uncompensated time doing paperwork'. Think about it.Brakeless - did the driver know? If not, who cares? Just because the victim's vehicle isn't up to scratch doesn't give the defendant carte-blanch to damage it or its pilot with impunity.

i'm not going to argue on this but theres a lot of assumption/bad advice going on there. insurance companies are not stupid. ill leave it there.
-
• #19
Hence file a report to the police, then get insurance detail from driver.
