  • Right, I need some help with my first Road build. I bought this Raleigh Dyna-Tech 700 from Law, It's a stunner (imo) and I want to do it justice with some period(ish) parts, preferably shiny silver, preferably Shimano?

I need everything, wheels, group set, the lot. So if anyone has any nice bits or advise please, chime in! I'll be scouring the classified as well of course.

I'm a bit concerned about the rear spacing being 126mm and that these frames have been know to crack if you run a 130mm hub. I've had mixed advice on this, most people saying foggetabooutit but I'd appreciate any experiences people have had. I know Law (previous owner) ran a 130mm and had no problems...

  • I wouldn't try to flex that - it's got a monostay right? Made of carbon bonded into ally lugs?

You can get 126 wheelsets and hubs pretty easily. I've got a couple of 126 rear hubs I don't need, a 70s record and an 80s Royce. High quality nos 6 speed freewheels like Reginas can be a little expensive as they're getting a bit thin on the ground.

  • Get thee to some jumbles ...

  • Hi Tom. If you want to go fairly period with this then try to get hold of a pair of mavic open pro rims as that's what this originally came with . its up to you whether you go shimano or campag as I think you could get it with either. I've got a brochure link somewhere. I'll try to find it. I think it's at work so I'll try and remember to send it you tomorrow.

  • Cheers chief. What was the group set & wheels you had on this?

    Newbie question 1: if I go with a 126mm hub can I still fit a 9speed cassette?

  • I had an Itm aero wheelset and shimano ultegra groupset. I think the original spec was shimano 600.

  • Newbie question 1: if I go with a 126mm hub can I still fit a 9speed cassette?

You certainly can. I run a 7speed with a spacer on one bike and a 9 speed cassette on my raleigh clubman. I'm going to try a 10 speed cassette on my bob jackson build also spaced at 126mm.

    Good luck with the build.

  • Yeah it was 600. Going to look into open pros cheers mate

Party on. It's all a bit confusing I'll be honest but I'm sure it'll come together. Probably with a bit of money down the drain but it's all good fun.

  • I've never seen a freehub respaced to 126, but I suppose that's possible.

I assumed you were going for 6speed as that's what 126 was generally for.

  • Hey Tom, something like these would be good. They'd have to be in good nick though.

The jumble at the velodrome last month would've been a good bet. There's a smaller one at parrs wood rural studies centre sometime in April.

  • Thanks Tom, gutted I missed that jumble. I'll be sure to get to the parrs wood one!

  • Just purchased these from Tel. http://s597.photobucket.com/user/Telsun/media/1stock/wheels/SAM_5685.jpg.html

Also, is this the catalouge you were talking about Law?? http://www.retrobike.co.uk/gallery2/d/56028-4/Raleigh_Lightweights_1990.pdf

Going to try and spec it to that although not sure about DT shifters… Bar ends?

  • That's the one.
Retrobike have a pretty good resource there.
Going for brifters is more exspensive and less period than traditional DT shifters but I really like them and haven't gone back.
Depends if you want to go full on retro rebuild, or with a semi-modern twist like I had it with the ultegra sti.

Just out of interest I've got a bunch of stuff off my build that i kept just in case i needed them. A period 3TTT 90mm stem and ergo bars combo if you're interested. (Can't remember the width) £18
Also a copy of a shimano 600 seatpost that I had on the bike. (I never found a real 600 post cheap enough!) £15
If you go down the STi route then I've got some downtube cable adjuster jobbies too. £10
You can have everything for £40 if you want.

I also finally found some forks for that Giant carbon frame I've got. I'll stick it up for sale soon but thought I'd give your housemate first refusal.
58cm carbon frame and 1' threadless carbon forks with 1' threadless cane creek headset £150

Frame and forks are what I've paid for them as they're unused having bought my Look.
The other stuff I'm selling for less as I've used the bits for a while on my build.

  • I'll definitely take the lot! Oh, wait, I just bought those wheels.... Can you hold out till pay day?

Good work finding the folks! Can't believe your selling such a beaut! I'll mention it to him but I think it'll be a bit on the large side, he's only wee. Shouldn't think you'll have too much trouble selling though but perhaps not to someone next door!

    Thanks again Tom

  • I'll put them to one side for you.
Let me know when you've got the cash.

  • Cheers mate

  • Up until recently i was running a Campagnolo 8 speed cassette hub in my Dyna tech 2070 which is similar looking to yours. It is also spaced at 126mm between the rear forks. i didn't experience much hassle getting the wheel in there. the set up was single speed however.

Now i'm running it as a six speed arrangement using only one chainring up front with all early 90's Mavic and a 126mm spaced rear hub.

I think these are great frames, came too late to save Raleigh's arse though.

  • Can't wait to see the build! Love the old Dyna-Tech's

  • Go with The DT's!!
I run DA 7700 9 speed st dhifters on my old Cov Eagle (126mm hub spacing), runs like a dream, light too!

  • Bought a Tricolour group on ebay complete with DT shifters. Everything looks in good shape so I'm sure, providing they work well, i'll be keeping them.

  • Finally got round to taking some pictures if anyones interested?

Was going to fit the group set today but found the BB I had kicking about won't fit. Anyone got one for sells?

Still need cables, tape, bottle cages and probably new tyres as well...

  • That hasn't worked has it?

    Try again
