  • You just can't move for Talbots these days.

It's finally my turn to assemble an unnecessary and self-indulgent custom frame... I can't claim to be a "T-rex" or an "Orangutan" - I just fancy a custom... so there.

I have been in discussion with Matt of Talbot for many months - changing my mind every 6.2 days (on average). Initially I wanted a Do-it-All Cross Bike (Much like Rogan's) but in the end I knocked together a Cannondale MTB for Commuting and Fun-Time. Now I have settled on a Pure-Breed Roadie Bike from Matt - A proper mile muncher - giving me more motivation put in 'proper' rides on the weekends.

This will be a lightweight but sensible build - Modern components but an overall retro flavour... Which of course means Campag and 32h hubs!

I have a few bits together already ...

    32h A23 rims

    NOS Record Cranks

There are some Hope Pro3 hubs under my bed somewhere... And a flite saddle which will be my perch of choice for now. The Frame will be mostly 853 - But will probably have a Columbus Max top tube for absolutely no good reason.

In effect the bike will be a fillet brazed (so lighter) version of my beloved Basso Loto - but with a slightly taller headtube and a 1-1/8" headtube to permit a wider choice of forks.. I will be carrying across the groovy fastback stays...

I'll keep you guys posted on developments - Matt works pretty quickly and I hear he has a new jig now so blink and you may miss it!

    DM

  • enve forks are the best

    just saying..

  • Enve are the new thomson - overpriced and overrated*

*Psych! - They're nice, logo kinda shouty though

  • Matt has started work on this now .. Basso will be up for sale shortly if anyone needs an Italian thoroughbred in 53x54

  • Jiggity

I spy a macbook.. through a daft tube

  • The jig is a thing of great beauty.

  • So .. A23 rims or Archetype?

    What is the current feeling?

I have silver A23s in 32 which look classy / timeless BUT I also have black archetypes in 28 hole which just look badass..

  • i like mine? all i have to comment

  • if rim brakes then silver I'd say.

  • Brakes are Silver Campy Skeleton jobbies

Rogan - Are yours still squeeeeling ?

  • my front squeals, but its nothing to do with the rims, its getting the canti pads set up right (fucking nightmare)

no noise from the rear soon as I got it set up right so I wouldn't take it into consideration

  • grey ones might look good?

  • dosen't the black breaking surface wear away fairly rapidly on black Archetypes?

but I'd say match the wheels to stem and seatpost.

  • I think theres two options

    1. silver wheels with rim brakes

    2. disc brakes or carbon rims.

  • I think ~~theres two options

    1. silver wheels with rim brakes

    2. disc brakes or~~ carbon rims.

    .

  • well ok now after few days with disc brakes on a drop bar bike I see that there is only this option when getting a custom frameset:

    1. get disc brakes, choose whatever rims you want.

    :-)

  • Discs for road are fine, I had a disc equipped 'road' bike in 2007!

But you have all the faff that comes with disc brakes.. The weight, the proprietary pads << and the expense of them. I've been 10st dead for over 10 years - Calipers stop me fine - even in the wet.

Rim brakes are just a damn sight more elegant on a road bike!

  • No Carbon rims either. Carbon Rims are for

    • Cat 1 Racers
    • Posers
  • Looking nice now.

We just need to shorten the seat tube extension and nearly ready for paint

Weight has come out at a respectable 1650g

  • Another shot of the cute wee stainless dropouts...

  • Looks cracking- and that's a great weight for a steel frame, this review of the Genesis Volare (which is 953 and TIG'd) says their 54cm frame is ~1,650g.

  • Well, there's no paint yet - and I'm still not sure about all the drillium along the bottom of the downtube...

Talking of paint ... I'm thinking Old Skool Fat Chance >>>

    Yay or Nay??

  • Does anyone know where I can get a lightweight seat collar in 29.8 / 30.0 that isn't salsa or hope!?

  • yay

  • Woodman death grip or clamp from a stock Cannondale superrsix evo would be lighter than Salsa/Hope.

You can get MT Zoom ones off eBay which are very light
