Jewellery

Mrs Sparky wants a piece of jewellery for her birthday, something permanent I guess, as it's a round number this year. Does anyone have any advice on where to go? I'm not spending loads here, but want something nice that preferably hasn't been mined by tiny African children at gunpoint.

Liberty have some nice timeless pieces at a range of prices (I don't work there)
Alex Monroe does lovely things .. liberty have a few of them
Don't buy any jewelry from etsy or notonthehighstreet.. quality is unreliable but usually crap.
Without knowing her style it's difficult to suggest any particular designer or shop. There are a few smaller boutiquey shops in Covent garden that have some lovely things.. not totally whacky but not like everything else.

She shares a studio in Camberwell with a couple of other Jewellers who might also be able to help you out depending on the style/price.

Also look out for the next open studios at Cockpit, Pullens Yard and Craft Central, the all have hand made Jewellery.

Why buy from her?

She has worked with all of the major (and one mid sized) auction houses over the past number of years as a jewellery specialist. She's a gemologist by training, with a background in fine art. Most of all, she has great taste!

Massive dredge.

My wife had her ears pierced about a year ago, so want to get her a pair of ear rings for her birthday. She is allergic to gold, so have to avoid that, and wanted to go a bit classier than silver, so was thinking platinum, however, I just want a really simple pair of studs, no diamonds or anything on them, and don't seem to be able to find something similar anywhere, is this for a reason?!

Did you manage to find any platinum earrings?

It's possible your wife may be allergic to some of the metals in the platinum alloy (similarly with gold).

I (and several of the jewellers I work with) will Rhodium plate earing posts and backs etc for those with severe allergies when gold plating isn't enough.

Past the birthday, but always on the look out! she was allergic to a white gold ring, but has happily worn platinum rings for the last 10 years, so hoping she would be fine with platinum. I shall have a look out for Rhodium.
