  • Had this, rode it loads:

    Built this, loved it:

Decided that discs on road bikes were ace, so had to sell the fixed gear and a bunch of other stuff and get a Pompetamine in PX's winter sale:

Couldn't justify new wheels yet, so had to use the old set off my 29er, unridden since 2012. Needed to rebuild the bearings on the WTB Single Duty hub, fit a smaller disc to the front and bolt on a 18T Velosolo cog:

(Bolt heads stuck out too far and fouled the fork so swapped for SS button heads)

    Shiny wheels

Shimano M756 front, WTB Single Duty rear, Mavic TN719 rims.

Here's what it looks like now:

Ignore seatpost height and bar position, just threw them on. Need to fit different brake levers, retape the bars and fit cranks and BB next. 32mm Panaracer Paselas and black SKS guards also to go on.

  • More fettling tonight. Lovely Campag Record Pista cranks gave perfect chainline on a 107mm UN55 BB but the crank just touched the chainstay:

Swapped for an ugly Stronglight Impact with ring on the inside instead:

Fitted saddle, bars and stem off the old fix:

  • I found that with a normal BB setup, the cranks (Miche Primato with Campag Veloce 111mm) touched the chainstay on my Pompetamine as well.

I'm getting fed up with carrying mine up the stairs and thinking of selling it, but I know I'd regret it if I did. I like the way yours is going. I was going to suggest gumwalls and then saw you had got Paselas already!

  • Thanks. Had another look at the cranks tonight and they've got to come off. Looks shit with the ring on the inside and they're 165mm - I'd like to try 170mm instead. So, what to chose? Got a compact Shimano Hollowtech II on the Kaffenback so know they'll fit a Pomp, but like the idea of Campag Ultra Torque. Would have to be aluminium though, which means NOS if I can find them...

  • You could try the Record again but with a longer spindle? Though that could fuck up the chainline.

I have the 'benefit' of running single speed with a conversion kit - one of the few upsides being that I can respace the rear cog to suit.

  • I have carbon ultratorque on mine. works fine. chain line is about 46 in outer ring iirc.

  • ^ Very nice. Did you get it resprayed or are the blue panels stickers?

Turns out I can't count. Bolt-on cog gives a chainline of about 53mm, not 43mm so Pista was never going to work anyway with such a short BB. Does mean I can put the ring on the outside of the Impact cranks and it wont look quite so bad.

  • thanks. stickers.
buy a longer spindle and get good looking cranks with correct chain line.

  • Yep. Once it's built I'll try to find some decent looking 110mm x 5 bolt cranks to replace the Impacts. Needs a new BB anyway but this one will do for now.

  • Drivetrain finished, Paselas, guards and front brake added:

  • Want to swap the bars to a set of Salsa Cowbells that I've got in the shed but other than that, I reckon it's done:

  • nice looking frame set up, i have a similar with carbon drive system, looking good

  • Hiraethus - what bars are those you're using?

  • Nice build. Take it you went for a longer BB in the end? I ran bolt on fixed with my Pometamine for two years with Impacts. Think I had to go 122mm to get the chain line bang on though. Only really nice cranks I could find in 110 bcd were Middleburn or these Sugino Mighty Tour which would have been perfect but they're super hard to get hold of and pretty spendy too. Gone single speed now, so I've moved over to Hollowtech 2 with a 6600 chainset.

  • Fids, they're Nitto M184. Not sure if you can get them in this country (or anywhere else, for that matter) any more. They're shagged though, I did them up a bit tight and the face plate on an old stem damaged the clamp area.

Chris, I just used the 107mm BB I had - just moved the ring to the outside. Lined up to within a couple of mm. Probably going to swap the rear hub to a Surly fixed disc so I might change the cranks then.

  • Cheers mate - looking for something with a similar shape.

  • hiraethus, what's the fixed frame in the opening post?

    Cheers.

  • Byercycles fixed/Pearson Hanzo. Lovely bike to ride.

  • Thanks.
