Where would you buy a derny?

Posted on
  • Where might you find one for sale and how much might one cost?

  • eBay? gumtree?

  • You looking for a functional derny bike or just a bike that you could use for the purpose? if it's for former deep pockets and lots of UTSF or if it's the latter honda cbf 125

  • Functional derny. Deep pockets, a few of us are considering buying it together and I'm trying to get an idea of pricing. I don't get the UTSF?

  • A labour of love, i asked Peter Deary (shouty pete as we know him) about his two derny bikes and he has spent years making them. I,m sure he would be happy to talk about them. Get in touch via the Manchester velodrome

  • Bob the velodrome manager here at Manchester Track has a contact for new ones. I'm told it's a guy called Simon (quick google says Arie Simon) in Holland. Bob isn't here right now but I can ask in January if you like.

edit: reading above yes, Pete could be good to ask also.

edit 2: I can't translate but www.dernyteam.nl might be the website to check out, specifically http://www.dernyteam.nl/ariesimon.php

  • honda cbf 125

    This times a million.

Cleaner, less smelly, less noisy, loads less maintenance, arguably safer.

  • Also try Graham Bristow- he certainly has one and (I may be slightly uncharitable) they seem like the kind of thing which you buy, then have to completely strip and re-assemble in order to make vaguely workable. Only go for it if you absolutely HAVE to have a Derny (so for example your track insists on it you are going to use it for derny racing) under all other circumstances as above posters have said, a modern small 4 stroke is better.

  • get hold of him through: contact@cyclingmasters.com might be him or they will have his email address.

  • they seem like the kind of thing which you buy, then have to completely strip and find something that you can bodge in place of the cheaply made, largely proprietary parts and re-assemble in order to make vaguely workable for about 10 laps then do it all over again.

    Ftfy.

  • Thanks for all the info guys. I'll pass it on to the rest of group and decide on next step.

  • Came across this

Looks really nice but no way it's really fast enough

  • Forget all the above bollox about Dernys. If you seriously want one then I can supply one and provide an after care service. They are not as dear as some would imagine, but they do require tlc. Ideally the BPA supply to individuals who will treat them with respect. We don't like supplying to clubs or other 'pool' user groups because they have a tendency to f@ck them up with mis -use. We have supplied many individuals and venues for over 15 years. These include Glasgow and Welwyn, currently quoting for Derby and refused to quote for Hong Kong and other third party end users. Look at it this way: would you let all and sundry jump in your car, thrash it, then expect it to be ok when you want to use it? Or, would you let your best road bike be used by any muppet in the club who wanted to go out for a winter bash and then expect it to be fit for racing in the summer? My Derny was bought 15 years ago, has been raced all over the continent, done shedloads of training hours at HH, won several National Championships and is as good as new. Why?
BECAUSE I LOOK AFTER IT 'COS ITS MINE!

Thanks for that. It's starting to look less and less likely we'll be able to afford it as a group, but at least I know now who to contact re purchase and upkeep. Many thanks.
