Naming children

  • Not that I ever have any intention of having children, but I do wonder about naming them.

I am married, my wife did not take my surname (upon my insistance, i just don't understand why she would change it, and other than 'tradition' no one has come up with a reason for it)

If we were to have children (highly unlikely, she wants them less than me, and I would have happily had a vasectomy at 17) my choice for names are Max Thunder and Jonny Awesome (First Name / Surname, not giving either of them my, or the wifes, surnames)

Is that legit? or does it need to bear the mark of my forefathers?

  • Bob

  • No idea, but please remember that all kids have to go through school. If the names are particularly retarded then they'll be bullied to within an inch of their lives*.

    • Unless you have the cash to go to the right private schools.
  • You can put what you want on the birth certificate I believe, a colleague of mine was looking into this as she is still married to her ex, and pregnant with the child of her new boyfriend, she didn't wish to name said sprog with her ex-husbands name, hence the inquiry.

I'd simply call the child [First name] Van [last name].

Try it- an example would be Bothwell Van Buckfast.

Lends an air of glamour to the most quotidian of names.

  • friend of mine's parents don't believe in the whole parental ownership thing, so his surname is the street on which he was born.

  • When I get married and have kids everyone is getting my surname, need to make sure it doesn't die out... we Smiths are a dieing breed, ok maybe not.

My girlfriend says if she has a little boy she wants to call it Xavier, I've said it can be Excalibur, Excalibur Van Smith? does that work?

  • what about "Von"?

    Ja?

  • Same thing, "Van" means "from" in Dutch/Flemish.

    Pick your Germanic nation!

  • I like Neil for a son. My last name is O'Neil.

  • Van doesn't mean nobility apparently...Von does.
    coz that counts innit

  • Zod, but it only works if it's surname before forename..

  • I telly like the idea of a very normal name that the initials spell something silly so something like Simon Peter Edward Weber or Tom Arthur David Andrews or Henry Edgar Robert Olivers.

I work with someone called George Reed which works too

Weird names and the shit kids cop at school makes them stronger and more successful in later life. My kids: Cecil, Cleetus and Bob. Bob is the girl, obviously.

  • My sons name starts with 'J', as mine, my dads and my uncles does. The reason being that all the tools in the family are marked with that letter, and it makes inheriting them much easier...
He got my surname as well. We are eight in total with that name and I thought it would be nice, if it lived on.

  • I do have a friend who has four girls - all named after trees or plants beginning with 'H'.

Hyacinthus orientalis (commonly known as hyacinth). The bulbs are poisonous, causing nausea, vomiting, gasping, convulsions, and possibly death. Even handling the bulbs can cause skin irritation.

  • Hedera helix (or common ivy) The leaves and berries are poisonous, causing stomach pains, labored breathing, possible coma.

  • Naming pets is harder than naming children. True fact.

  • Hemlock

  • Naming pets is harder than naming children. True fact.

Trufact is the name of my cat.

  • Hazel, Holly, Heather, Hebe

Ilex aquifolium (commonly known as European holly). The berries cause gastroenteritis, resulting in nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

    I knew I'd get one. :)

  • If I ever have a kid I will start a thread and the forum can name it.

Tools? Seems a bit harsh on yourself, your dad and your uncle.

  • Naming children is archaic, vain and indulgent. Wait till they're adults, then they can choose their own name
