I don't think there is a catch really, accommodation in LA seems to be not only reasonably priced but generously proportioned, it's a positive side effect of all that sprawl!
I can highly recommend where we stayed in Silverlake on Hyperion Avenue, towards the Sunset Boulevard end. This guy:
https://www.airbnb.co.uk/users/show/1587315Has a group of little flats off a courtyard with a hot tub hidden away from the road. It was all very clean, well furnished and had everything we wanted. Because he's got a selection you should be able to find one that suits you and the location means it's very quiet.
He leaves a good list of recommendations and it's an easy couple of minutes walk down to Sunset and all the local amenities .

Turns out that was one of the places we were looking at - so have booked it.
Always good to have a personal recommendation :)
Anyone used it?
We are off to LA in January and looking for somewhere to stay for 4 nights for the two of us + Theo (18months) - before heading off to stay with friends in San-Diego
Look to be a good selection of properties available for reasonable prices... whats the catch?
Thinking of staying in Silverlake, or possibly Laurel Canyon
