How many times is it acceptable to be fired?

  • Today I was fired from a fulltime job I had previously enjoyed.
    (Merry Christmas from my boss)

Admittedly my mind has been other things and I had not been performing to my absolute best this past month.

However this this not completely unchartered territory for me and ive started to wonder if I should continue on with my chosen career path of software development?

In line with other random forum randomness such as the 'how much do you earn poll'
    http://www.lfgss.com/thread115507.html

Not including constructive dismissal, compromise agreements, voluntary redundancy - I'd like to know on average how many times members have been fired?

Im in the middle of the options given.

  • Sorry to hear that. Depending on the circumstances of your dismissal, you always have the option of speaking to an employment lawyer if you feel it was unfair.

  • It's pretty tricky to fire someone in the UK lawfully, no?

If your performance was a bit off simply firing you is curious. Did they try any remedial action, any warnings, signs of failure in appraisals etc?

On the other hand, if you had destroyed the company's source code and all back-ups of their product then they might have a case.

  • Unfortunately this is a myth

You only have the right to be fairly dismissed if you have been in continuous fulltime employment for over two years / excepting cases of discrimination/whistleblowing.

Not claiming I was wrongfully dismissed.. I had a shocking month.
It wasn't gross misconduct - still somthing im yet to achieve.

  • Two years and you have the right to a tribunal and a written statement of why you were fired, but wefireyou.inc still has show to you they did due diligence.

Well that's what I thought, anyway.

  • Just so you know, my response to the poll is 'never', but my answer to the question posed by the thread title is very different.
It depends on what you do. Some of the greatest people I know have never been able to hold down a 'job', or even be interested in having one.

  • Never, although I've quit two that if I'd have carried on at I would have probably been fired

  • i think lyfe isnt about work so it doesnt matter how many times u get fired its all abot how much fun ur having overall

    #amirite or....

  • Only been fired once, and was hired back at the same place about 6 months later.

I've had a few jobs where I've been on a path to severe disciplinary action or a firing but left of my own accord in time. These have been jobs that i didn't care about though, while living at home etc.

  • Twice, sort of.
1st was as a temp at Coutts, I was an incredibly lazy and naive 17 year old, they didn't want me.
2nd was temping at Barclays in Poole. I came up to the city for new years with my GF (she lived up here) I decided to call in on the 2nd with a sob story about the trains being cancelled.
Came in on the3rd and they bulleted me.
Not been sacked in the last 13 years though

  • Never.

I've always done any job I've had to the best of my ability. Even the shitty ones I didn't enjoy.

  • The real question is will any future employer find it acceptable?
I'm stuck in a job that pays me very well for just turning up but staying is nibbling away at my commutation. I should take the money and run but I can't find a new job. I hear there's a job in software development somewhere I could go for that, I have absolutely no IT skills but it can't be that difficult can it?

  • If you're good at what you do, and have the work examples and credentials to back it up, no-one will care (for most work). Anyway, you should view working for someone else as a means to an end, not a way of life. Getting hung up on this is totally not worth it.

Thinking about/planning/working on/failing/learning/rethinking/succeeding/rinse-repeating some venture, that you're invested in on a level deeper than living pay-cheque to pay-cheque. Something that doesn't mean a greasy haired suit-skinned cad who doesn't even know your name (not that it matters by this point) is making a ton of cash; while you spend the majority of the time you aren't asleep, getting stressed.

Surprise! It's a scam. Ever compared what your effort rate is, when calculated for the client invoice? You're getting rinsed mate, especially in London. Surely you have interests or ideas that you are able to deliver in a way that also has the potential to be profitable? Pursue them, you never know, you might be able to make enough to live comfortably off of it, enjoy your work, and not get fired in the run up to Christmas. You as a developer of all people should be aware of this, especially right now. What's the worst that could happen? You'll just end up working for someone else again.

  • I got fired once. It was rubbish.

  • Twice, 9 years apart. By the same company (which was in the news an awful lot today).

  • Twice. Once when picking fruit during summer hols, worked hard all day and earned about eight quid. Next day fucked about trying to pull all day and earned a fiver. They sacked me.

Next was years later and technically a 'comprimise agreement' in that I was obviously not up to the job six months in, they said here's 12K to fuck off quietly. Sad at the time though.

  • Boast posts >>>>>

  • Got sacked 7 years ago from a job in Orpington. Same guy interviewed me 4 weeks ago and I'm working under him in a different firm now.

Not being good enough to do a job isn't nearly as bad as just doing your job badly imo - you can always work on new abilities, try repairing a bad reputation though...

Don't understand why they would give you a compromise agreement if you were only six months in. I've had experience of these too but only where ive been employed for well over a year. Some kind of Union job or banking?

Agreed. That was what happened to me, I was trying to work beyond my abilities. That's why the same company gave me another try 9 years on, the fools.

  • I've been made redundant twice in my 10 professional years. First time was amazing, it was voluntary, I'd had enough, and I got a few quid out of it. Second time was horrific, handled really shoddily by the company and a crap thing to go through. I ended up out of work for six months (summer 2012) and divided my time between applying for jobs and riding my bike.

The job I'm in now is great, the best one yet (apart from a college summer job at Burger King back in the day) so in a way the last redundancy was a cool thing. I didn't once consider putting my efforts into contesting their decision.

  • the secret to not getting sacked is in my right hand in the pic

i signed a compromise agreement after only being in the job for 3 months!

  • the compromise agreement is to ensure you dont have a claim of any type, not just that which can be advanced with the protection of 2 years service which for some complaints statute requires (such as unfair dismissal)

  • Still don't really understand. ^
What kind of claim would likely be considered by a court from a disgruntled former employee?

I'm guessing these are banking jobs.. different world to rest of us.
Basically you have zero rights as a worker in this country, other than to find another job whenever you feel like it.

Disappointed that the majority of forumers have 'never' been fired.
Its somthing that should be experienced at least once or your not pushing yourself.

Don't recommend making a habit of it though.
