Genesis Equilibrium 853

  • So, not really a project as it's finished now but more a showcase of the great work of Fitzrovia and simple exhibitionism.

I've been riding alu geared bikes for 4-5 years now (Specialised Sequoia, Condor Agio) and finally decided to go all steel.

    Originally I was going to go with a custom Roberts but it was slightly out of my price range. The new Genesis range has just been announced and it seemed like the right choice;

    • nice colour (I really like the 853 homage)
    • 853 tubing
    • available quickly

    My spec was as follows:

    • Shimano Ultegra 6800 11 speed (39/53)
    • TRP RG957 deep drop brakes, Swisstop pads
    • 3T Egronova Carbon bars LTD edition
    • Chris King Sotto Voce headset
    • Thomson post, stem
    • Specialised Toupe Pro
      • Wheels: H Plus Son, Ultegra 6800 hubs, Sapim spokes, Conti 4 Seasons
    • Curana C-Lite guards

Steerer has been trimmed but with 30cm of spacers so I can dial it in. Likewise, saddle is untouched so need to get best position. The bar tape is a close match to the green accents but not exactly, I kind of like it though!

So frustrating not being able to get on it and speed off immediately but that's what the weekend is for. Bike will primarily for long rides (50+ miles) touring and sportives.

Pics from the Fitzrovia blog, I felt like a proper proud father getting back to my workplace in Soho. Immediate thoughts are the hoods, shifters and levers are fantastic, shifting is very smooth as well. Coming from 105 I could barely feel it.

Massive thanks to the guys who are super relaxed and did a great jobbing with sourcing, pricing and building. Massive recommendation from me.

I have no idea how to resize and attach pics so if someone is more technically minded than me can tell me, please do!

  • that's nice

  • Can I ask what size frame is this?

  • Can I ask what size frame is this? And what mudguards?

as above - Curana C-Lite guards

  • that's nice

Cheers, I'm dead chuffed with it.

Amey, thanks for the pics. It's a 52, which has a TT of just under 54 from memory.

    Guards are Curana C Lite.

  • I have a pair of those mudguards, sitting in a box.

    [sad face]

  • Thanks for the kind words Mark, always a pleasure to build something super nice. And yes, I'm pretty taken with that new 11 speed group, was so easy to set up, and shifting is super smooth thanks to improved cable routing at the shifters.

    Enjoy!

  • ^ tempting 11 speed is tempting

  • Looks nice. I considered these frames when looking around recently but found something too good to pass up instead. Good choices there.

  • It reminds me of my Rourke.

  • Very nice - really enjoy riding my Equilibrium, even if it is just the cheapy 520 frame :-)

You'll be eating the miles on that

  • 11 speed Ultegra on a steel frame is very on-message.

Ha, hi Alex, cheers for 'making yourself known'. And yeah, not sure why people are reticent on 11 speed, seems like a no brainer to me.

Overall was a great experience and incidentally I took a look at the wheels properly when I got back as well. I think you guys will be my builders of choice from here on in.

    Thanks again.

  • Excellent bulid. I was dissing Genesis colourways in another thread, then saw yours. Found a f/f at my lbs for a decent price, looks even better in the flesh, so took the plunge, now the very proud owner of an awesome bit of steel. Can't wait to get it built up and on the road.

  • Nice, I think it's a real beaut.

    Bring on the nice weather!

  • Aye, although decent set of mudguards and I'm off round the peak district, as long as it doesn't snow.

  • that's lovely!

  • Bring on the nice weather!

    Hah!

Great bike, I loved the 853 Equilibrium, I think they did the right thing by speccing the steel fork instead of a carbon.

[strike]I have to ask, why a 53/39 with a big cassette instead of a compact with normal cassette?[/strike]

^ just realised that it could likely be a 11-25 with a "28" 11th gear.

  • ^ Got it in one my friend.

  • Just contemplating one of these. Have you tried it with a loaded rack? What setup?
