Well, as a member of the italian community I feel that I have to reply to this, but not having taken part in any sportive, I might say wrong things. Anyway, from what all my friends have told me (when trying to drag me with them), usually the front of the "race" is generally composed of hard core cyclists which will fight quite hard for the win (many times the final average speed is even higher than the one of professionals on the same course...). behind them there is a wide variety of riders, which spans the whole range of possibilities.
I hope this is useful! -

Toying with the idea. Have heard good things about it.
Has anyone heard of this or ridden it before?
I've heard Italian sportives are a bit more like races, and the website for this seems to suggest as much.
Would love to hear opinions as the missus and I are keen to sign up
