lovely frame littigator. About 2 years ago I resprayed and rebuilt my raleigh clubman
531 using modern 9speed kit. It's a lovely ride. I even did a time trial on it and found that I went as 'quick' as I do on my aluminium ribble which I aid £900 quid for!!Good luck with the build, my raleigh is my favourite bike.

Cheers for that, yep I am pretty excited about it. I have an old Raleigh Merlin as my hack and I love it. This one as a Sunday best is going to be pretty sweet. Also, my first foray into Campag so I'm looking forward to that too.

So....FINALLY! I have some pics of the respray to share.
I'm pretty pleased with it overall. Now to start on the rebuild, which will hopefully be a little quicker in completion than the respray!

Thanks guys, I have a website, but I am based in Cape Town so probably not cost effective so send your stuff down despite the shocking state of the rand these days.

So would you believe I stumbled across another Ti Team recently that had Super Record Strada cranks and Super Record brake calipers on it, so those will be going straight across onto my respray rebuild.
Unfortunately, the guy I had bought it off a) had a really bad respray done about 10-12 years ago so I'll most likely respray this new frame as well b) he also (AAAARRRRGGGHHH) stripped off the Super Record derailleurs and downtube levers and replaced them with (HEADSLAP) Shimano STI Sora kit! and c) replaced the Campag headset and BB with some just as cheap crap as the Sora stuff. When I asked as casually as possible if he might still have the bits in a box somewhere he said "Nah, I never keep junk lying around". Still, I did bloody well for the price paid for it all.
And the frame at least is another Ilkeston one, I'll be selling it after the respray, but here's a pic of it's current finish.
No prizes other than boasting rights for anyone who can spot the most glaring errors in it's existing refinish! There are at least 5 visible in this picture.
Coincidentally it is only 5 frames after my original one (SB4519 and SB4524), so must have been part of a batch that made their way through the trade embargo back in the early 80s into Apartheid South Africa.

That seat tube decal is about 4 inches too high, and no tubing decals.
-
• #17
Oh and the headtube should possibly be black
-
• #18
No SBDU chainstay decals either. Did he do this "respray" himself?
-
• #19
Correct on all the above, still another 3 errors to spot!

You can see in this detail shot that the masking, although reasonably cut considering this is pre-vinyl cut stencilling, was sprayed out of line. All that effort to cut the stencil and then the painting is crap!

The decals look hand drawn, no pinstripes through them. No Ti rounds on the forks or seat tube and no winners badge on the down tube?
-
• #22
Those are also all correct, but the real blinders are...
'Team" is placed to high on the top tube and "T.I. Raleigh" actually isn't even straight on the down tube!

Looks pretty nice
I picked this up a couple of weeks ago. The bike (Ilkeston SB4516 from 1980) is in generally good condition, although there are some nasty scuffs on a couple of the decals and a few rust spots. No dents though.
It has Campy headset, BB, seat-tube, shifters and hubs. Mavic rims, Shim 600 front derailleur and Suntour SX rear derailleur. Crankset is Gipiemme Dual Sprint. Levers and hoods are BRS Blaze (?) and brake calipers are Modolo Speedys. Also has Cinelli bars and stem. So all period correct but not model correct.
I'll be replacing the non Campag parts as time and budget allows and I'll be stripping the frame and respraying it once the decals set arrives. I'll also rebuild the wheels.
Not a conversion I know, but I still thought it a nice project to share with people who hopefully appreciate it.
