Just ride 48X15. Going one tooth on the front will make little difference.

If he's under 16 48x14 will be bigger than restrictions allow.

You'd be talking only 5rpm or so difference, so not a huge difference.
My son is doing his first track race in a couple of weeks time and I thought I may enter as well (novice league!) to give him a bit of moral support.
I bought a Felt TK3 a while ago but the stock drivetrain is 3/32. It has 48 x 15T (86.4") and the last time I rode it I span out a bit. I have read a few bits of advice and people seem to suggest 88" for novice track league riding.
The problem is I am struggling to find any reasonably priced 49T 144BCD 3/32 chainrings to give me 88"
Do you think dropping a tooth on the back would be too much of a step (going for 86.4 to 92.6")?
It is an indoor track.
